GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University women's basketball team won its fourth game in a row, 87-66 over The College of New Jersey on National Girls & Women in Sports Day.
The Profs have an overall mark of 19-2 and they are 13-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Rowan in first place in the conference and holds a two-game lead over Stockton University and Montclair State University with four games to play. The Lions are 10-11 with a 6-8 NJAC record. They are in seventh place in the league.
Guard Anyssa Sanchez (jr. Stratford, NJ/Sterling) was perfect from the field (7-7), scoring 19 points and had seven rebounds. Guard/forward Melissa Lake (gr. Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) tallied 16 points, six rebounds, three assists and four steals. Guard/forward Kaitlin Schullstrom (gr. Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) recorded 14 points. Guard/forward Summer Crilley (so. Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) collected 13 points off the bench. Forward Kate Matthews (gr. Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) contributed 11 points and nine boards.
For TCNJ, guard Angelica Esposito (sr. Lincroft, NJ/St. John Vianney) scored a game-high 20 points. Kate O'Leary (fr. Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) scored 13 points and guard Kim Dana (jr. Freehold, NJ/Freehold) added 11.
TCNJ scored the first basket of the game then Rowan collected nine straight for a 9-2 lead (6:29). Sanchez had five points. Esposito netted a three-pointer to make it 13-9 at the 4:03 mark. The Profs concluded the quarter on a 15-3 run that included a triple by Crilley as the horn sounded and gave Rowan a 28-12 advantage.
The Profs started the second by scoring 17 of the first 19 points, expanding the cushion to 31 (45-14) with 4:54 remaining. Six different Rowan players scored with Crilley and Sanchez each tallying four points to lead the way. The Profs held at least a 24-point advantage for the remainder of the half and went into the break leading 57-27.
Rowan was in front 63-33 at the 7:01 mark of the third. The Lions then used a 15-5 run to trim the deficit to 20 (68-48) at the 1:43 mark. The Profs recorded the final five points of the quarter on a layup by Schullstrom (1:29), a free throw by Crilley (0:30) and a layup by a guard/forward Alex Raring (so. Linwood, NJ/Mainland Reg.) (0:17) and took a 73-48 advantage into the fourth.
The Lions scored the first eights points of the final frame to get within 17 (73-56), but that was as close as they would get for the remainder of the game. The Profs led by as many as 22 points in the fourth and came away with the 21-point victory.
Rowan travels to Kean University on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 3 p.m.
