New Paltz Women’s Basketball Knocks Off Oneonta, 70-59, in Catskill Cup Contest

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Sophomore guard Jasmine Bryant (Elmont, N.Y./St. Mary's College Prep) recorded 19 points and a career-high 12 rebounds in the State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team's 70-59 victory over Catskill Cup rival SUNY Oneonta on Tuesday evening. With the win, New Paltz leads 15-14 in the 2015-16 Catskill Cup standings.

The Hawks rise to 13-5, 8-3 and are back on the road on Friday, Feb. 5 when they play SUNY Potsdam at 5:30 p.m. Oneonta drops to 12-6, 8-3 and will head out on the road to face SUNY Plattsburgh on Friday, Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m.

The Red Dragons grabbed a 12-11 edge at the end of a close first quarter. Two layups in the paint by sophomore guard/forward Laura Stuart (Levittown, N.Y./Division Avenue) pulled the Hawks ahead in the start of the second period but Oneonta sat close behind the whole way, only trailing the Hawks­­ by four at intermisson (32-28).

The Red Dragons were hot out of the gates in the third period, quickly tying up the score to 37-all as junior guard Cara Adams landed a 3-point equalizer with 6:41 remaining.  

Oneonta continued to chip away at New Paltz's lead, ultimately bringing the score within one. However the Hawks easily escaped the clutches of the Red Dragons on a 9-1 burst that was capped off on a last second layup by junior guard/forward Kit Small (Slingerlands, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) to hand New Paltz a 52-43 edge heading into the final stretch.

The Hawks grabbed their largest lead of the game as Bryant scored six unanswered points with back-to-back 3-pointers, building New Paltz's lead to 16 points. Oneonta fought hard to close the gap but couldn't slice the deficit to less than nine as the Hawks pushed a heavy offensive attack to take the win.

New Paltz held a 47-35 edge in rebounds and shot 40 percent from both the floor (24-of-60) and the 3-point mark (10-of-25). Oneonta collected 21 points off turnovers, 22 points in the paint and 24 bench points while shooting 35.7 percent (20-of-56) from the field.

Bryant had an impressive night on the court as she connected on 5-of-8 beyond the arc and 6-of-9 from the field. Stuart also notched a double-double with a career-high 18 points and 12 boards while shooting 6-of-12 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the line. Small chipped in 17 points for the Hawks' efforts.

For Oneonta, senior guard Bryn Loomis tallied 14 points to lead the Red Dragons while Adams recorded 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds in the loss.
