BALTIMORE – Freshman Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) posted 18 of her 20 points in the first half as Gettysburg College maintained its hold on a playoff spot with a 52-36 victory over Johns Hopkins University inside Goldfarb Gym Tuesday night.
Gettysburg (14-4, 8-4 CC) avenged an opening-season loss to Johns Hopkins (8-10, 6-6 CC) with the victory. The Bullets moved into a tie with Haverford (13-6, 8-4 CC) for third in the Centennial Conference standings with a showdown against No. 12 Muhlenberg College (16-1, 10-1 CC) looming Thursday.
Gettysburg led from start-to-finish as Dorshimer knocked down a three-pointer to start the game. It took less than three minutes for the visitors to grab a double-figure lead with senior Emily Duggan (Marmora, N.J./Ocean City) completing an old-fashioned three-point play to make it 12-2 at 7:17 in the first quarter.
Duggan capped a seven-point surge to start the second quarter with her first three-pointer of the season to make it 24-9. Gettysburg waltzed into halftime with a 30-17 advantage.
Sophomore Emily Gibbons (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) tallied all 10 of her points during the third quarter as the lead blossomed to a game-high 23 (44-21) with 2:12 remaining in the frame. The advantage did not dip below 17 until the game's final second as the reserves closed out the victory.
Only a last-second three-pointer by Lexie Scholtz kept Johns Hopkins from its lowest point total against Gettysburg since the teams' first meeting in 1979-80 (77-20). The Blue Jays only managed 34 points in a loss to the Bullets on Dec. 1, 2009.
Gettysburg held Johns Hopkins to just 21.4 percent shooting from the floor, including just 2-of-17 (11.8 percent) from beyond the arc. The Bullets held a 50-45 advantage in rebounds.
Dorshimer hit 7-of-16 shots and all four of her free throws. The first-year has scored in double-figures in all but one of her last 16 games. Gibbons added eight rebounds to her ninth-straight double-figure scoring outing, while Duggan finished with eight points and six rebounds. Senior Jessica Porter (Narberth, Pa./Lower Merion) grabbed nine boards.
Katie Clark tallied 11 points and eight rebounds and Beatriz Williams posted nine points and six rebounds for Johns Hopkins.
