MILWAUKEE -- A 9-2 game-ending run in favor of host Alverno College, eked out a 60-56 victory over Dominican University Tuesday night inside Reiman Gymnasium in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action.
After a Gabby Hood jumper pulled the Inferno within one, Katelyn Bartlett sank a pair of free throws with 1 minute, 26 seconds left to give Alverno the lead for good.
A Brooke McBain jumper from the short-corner extended the lead to 57-54 before the Stars (3-17, 2-13 NACC) scored their final points of the night with 18 seconds remaining.
Tessa Mersberger made 1-of-2 bonus throws for a 58-56 lead before the Inferno defense stopped the visitors on their final possession, and Hood made a pair of free throws with a tenth of a second left for the final points of the game.
Alverno (10-10, 7-8) was somehow able to overcome 22 turnovers, 22 fouls and 16-rebound deficit to capture the gritty victory -- its seventh straight over Dominican.
McBain tied for game-high honors with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and a team-best eight rebounds, while Karli Selear anchored the Inferno defense that forced 26 turnovers with a game-high four steals.
The Stars, who led 44-41 at the end of the third quarter, made just 7-of-17 free throws. Jasmyn Hardin led the visitors with 17 points and 15 rebounds.
Alverno hits the road for its next game at Concordia University Wisconsin Saturday afternoon.
