UNE runs win streak to a dozen with 96-31 win over Gordon

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The nationally-ranked University of New England women's basketball team raced out to a 52-10 lead after two quarters and rolled to a 96-31 Commonwealth Coast Conference win over Gordon College on Tuesday (Feb. 2) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Nor'easters, ranked 21st in the USA Today Sports/WBCA Coaches' Poll, earned their 12th consecutive win to improve to 17-3 overall and remain perfect (13-0) in conference play. UNE has taken its last 18 meetings with Gordon (4-16, 0-13 CCC) and is now 43-0 all-time versus CCC foes at the Harold Alfond Forum.

Olivia Shaw (SO/Saco, Maine) led all scorers with 21 points to pace UNE. She added five rebounds, three assists and three steals in just 18 minutes of playing time. Alicia Brown (JR/Greenland, N.H.) contributed 16 points and three blocks, while Sam MacDonald (SO/Lebanon, N.H.), Brooke Flaherty (JR/Portland, Maine) and Laura Holman (FY/Portland, Maine) combined for 37 points off the bench. MacDonald was 6-for-8 from the floor for 15 points, Flaherty knocked down 5 of 8 for 11, and Holman connected on 5 of 8 field goal attempts en route to a career-best 11 points.

Jamie Tafoya (FY/Fort Collins, Colo.) was the lone Gordon player in double figures with 10 points. She added five boards and three steals. 

UNE was in control from the outset, leading 24-6 after one quarter and outscoring the Fighting Scots 28-4 in the second to open up an insurmountable 42-point (52-10) cushion heading into intermission. The Nor'easters limited Gordon to just three field goals and 14.3 percent (3 of 21) shooting over the opening 20 minutes.

The Nor'easters' largest lead (70) came with just under five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. No UNE starters played more than 19 minutes for the game, as UNE received a season-best 45 points from its bench.

Big Blue shot 56.5 percent (39 of 69) for the evening and was 12-for-13 (92.3 percent) from the free throw line. The Nor'easters forced 35 Fighting Scot turnovers -- the fourth time UNE's defense has forced an opponent into 30 or more miscues.

Both teams are back in action Saturday. Gordon hosts Salve Regina University (1 p.m.), while the Nor'easters head to Curry College (1 p.m.).
