GREENSBORO, N.C. - Guilford College head coach Stephanie Flamini claimed her 200th Guilford win as the Quakers earned a Saturday evening Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Washington and Lee University, 60-58.
Washington and Lee (10-9, 5-5 ODAC) made seven of their first ten shots to open the first quarter and jumped to a lead as large as eight points with 3:34 left in the opening period. Guilford (16-2, 10-1 ODAC) closed the period producing an 8-2 run to chop Washington and Lee's advantage in half to close the quarter. The run extended into the second period, where the Quakers erased the lead entirely to cap the run, 12-2. Guilford tied the contest once more with 7:22 left in the period before the Generals regained control. Washington and Lee grew their lead back to six points twice before the end of the period, when Jackie Clifford sunk a layup at the buzzer to reclaim a six-point lead at halftime.
Both sides opened the third quarter trading buckets until an Anais Weatherly three-pointer with 6:43 left in the period ignited a 10-0 run lasting 2:52 to claim Guilford's first lead of the contest. The run extended their lead to six points. Washington and Lee countered with a 6-0 run in the final 3:19 of the period to even the contest. The Generals extended their run and regained the lead on an Emma Redding jumper 23 seconds into the fourth quarter, but Amy Steller countered with a three-pointer 11 seconds later to swing the advantage back to Guilford. Washington and Lee claimed a one-point lead with 4:52 left, their final lead of the contest, as Weatherly sunk Guilford's third three-pointer of the quarter nine seconds later. Essence Abraham's three-pointer with 3:01 remaining was Guilford's final field goal of the contest as Washington and Lee countered to end a 3:01 scoring drought thanks to Redding's jumper with 1:21 left. After a stretch of five-combined fouls in 13 seconds in the game's closing moments, Washington and Lee had possession in their frontcourt with two seconds remaining, but Guilford's defense held off a potential three-point attempt to earn the win.
The Quakers shot 33.3 percent from the field, boasting an improved second-half effort by shooting 40 percent. Guilford shot nine-of-22 (40.9 percent) from three-point range. The Generals shot 49.1 percent from the field, including a blistering 55 percent in the second half.
Washington and Lee committed 20 turnovers, which the Quakers produced into 23 points off Generals' miscues. Guilford committed only seven turnovers that Washington and Lee converted into nine points.
Weatherly finished with her tenth double-double of the season, scoring 16 points on seven-of-14 shooting while pulling down 12 rebounds. The junior also added five assists and four steals. Steller was the remaining Quaker player in double-figure scoring, totaling 12 points on four-of-eight shooting, four-of-six from three-point range.
Ailyn Kelly led the Generals with 12 point on six-of-13 shooting while pulling down nine rebounds. Three other Generals boasted double-figure scoring, led by Redding's double-double effort, where she scored 11 points on five-of-six shooting and secured ten rebounds.
Washington and Lee out-rebounded the Quakers, 44-29, but both sides stayed even on the offensive glass, 14-14. Guilford held the edge in second-chance points, 12-10, while Washington and Lee's offense held the edge in the paint, 34-22. Guilford's bench outscored Washington and Lee's reserves, 20-9.
