CORTLAND, N.Y. - New Paltz outscored Cortland 22-6 over the final seven minutes as the Hawks defeated the Red Dragons, 73-63, in a SUNYAC women's basketball contest. With the result, both teams are now 12-5 overall and tied for third place in the league with 7-3 records.
Courtney Irby led New Paltz with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting. She scored 16 of her points in the second half after playing only eight first-half minutes due to early foul trouble. Irby also grabbed seven rebounds. Jasmine Bryant scored 19 points off the bench on 6-of-9 shooting, 3-of-6 from 3-point range, and Colleen Ames also made three 3-pointers and ended with 12 points. Kit Small added nine points and a team-high eight rebounds and Goldie Harrison dished out four assists.
Alyssa Crosby (Brier HIll/Hammond) led three double-figure Cortland scorers with 17 points and also paced the Red Dragons with seven rebounds. She made 8-of-12 shots from the field. Stephanie Rice (Duanesburg) poured in 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and Jennifer Deuel (Whitesboro) finished with 10 points, six rebounds, three steals and a career-best seven assists.
Cortland trailed 12-9 after one quarter and 37-30 at halftime. The Red Dragons, however, outscored the Hawks 22-9 in the third quarter to take a 52-46 lead.
Cortland's lead remained at six at 57-51 on a Rice 3-pointer with 7:33 remaining. At that point, New Paltz scored eight straight points, including four by Irby and three by Bryant, to take a 59-57 lead. Cortland answered with baskets by Crosby and Danielle Levine (Holbrook/Sachem North) to regain the lead at 61-59 with 3:55 left, but Bryant's 3-point play at the 3:19 mark gave the Hawks a 62-61 advantage.
The teams traded baskets on their next possessions, with Crosby's jumper briefly giving Cortland the lead before Small answered with a layup at the 2:35 mark. Bryant's steal and easy layup extended the margin to three, and an Irby layup with 1:25 left put New Paltz up 68-63. Cortland missed two shots on its next trip up the court, and Bryant sealed the win with a 3-pointer from the left corner with 33 seconds remaining.
New Paltz shot 40 percent overall and 8-of-24 (33 percent) from 3-point distance, while Cortland was 38 percent overall and 5-of-21 (24 percent) from three. The Hawks outscored Cortland 19-6 on the foul line.
Cortland will travel to Brockport on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
