In a game featuring the two remaining teams unbeaten in Empire 8 games, the St. John Fisher College women's basketball lost to host, Stevens Institute of Technology 51-35 on Friday.
The loss snapped Fisher's nine game winning streak as the Cardinals are now 14-3 overall and 7-1 in Empire 8 action on the season. With the win, Stevens moves to 12-5 overall and 8-0 in Empire 8 games.
Fisher was never able to find a groove offensively throughout the contest, as it only shot 30.8% (16-of-52) from the field and scored a season-low 34 points in the game.
The offensive struggle began early in the game as the Cardinals only managed six points in the first quarter. Despite the scoring difficulties, the Cardinals were only down 10-6 heading into the second quarter.
In the second quarter, Fisher fell behind 17-8 within the first three minute before Nicole Robinson assisted on a Maria Kelleher jumper to spark a 6-0 run that put the Cardinals down by three with 4:51 left before halftime. That was as close as Fisher would come in the quarter however, as the Cardinals trailed 24-16 at intermission.
The Ducks and the Cardinals exchanged 3-pointers to start the third quarter before Mary Kate Cusack hit a layup to cut Stevens' lead down to just six at 27-21 with 8:23 left.
Neither team would score again for the next three minutes as Alyssa Robens broke the scoreless streak with a free throw to make it a five point game with five minutes remaining in the third frame.
The Cardinals would not come within closer than that five point deficit for the rest of the game though, as Stevens outscored Fisher 24-13 throughout the rest of the contest, holding on for the 16-point win.
Caroline Robertson had one of her best games of the season for Fisher, scoring 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting while also grabbing six rebounds. Emily Piacentini also contributed seven points and four rebounds in the game.
The Cardinals will be back in action at 8 p.m. on Monday as they host Utica College in an Empire 8 contest.
