Montclair, NJ – Junior guard Rachael Krauss and sophomore guard Erica Snow each hit twice from behind the arc in the fourth quarter as Montclair State pulled away in the final period for a 62-50 win over Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday evening.
Sophomore Katie Sire and Krauss each posted double-doubles as MSU (12-6, 8-3 NJAC) completed a season sweep of the Scarlet Raiders (6-12, 2-9 NJAC) with the win. Sire had 20 points and 11 rebounds while Krauss finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Snow posted 12 points all from three-point range, helping the Red Hawks complete a sweep of the season series with Rutgers-Newark while extending its winning streak to 10 games against the Scarlet Raiders.
Arianna Williams finished with a game-high 21 points along with six rebounds for Rutgers-Newark (6-12, 2-9 NJAC), which fell for the fifth time in its last six outings.
Rutgers-Newark opened the game with an 11-point run as Maria Simmons and Shala Glenn had four points apiece. MSU responded with a 11-0 run of its own tying the game with 3:20 left on a Sire layup. Williams put the visitors back in front with a jumper sparking a 7-2 run to close out the period as Rutgers-Newark led 18-13.
Montclair State opened the second quarter with an 8-0 taking the lead for the first time on Sire's two free throws with 7:44 left. After a pair of ties, the Red Hawks took the lead as Tiarra Dillard buried a three from the left corner which was followed by a three from Taylor Harmon and basket by Yazmine Lacey giving MSU a 31-23 advantage. Zoe Curtis capped off what turned out to be a half-ending 10-2 run as Montclair led 33-25 at the break.
Glenn and Williams scored eight points apiece for Rutgers-Newark in the third as the Raiders tied the game at 39-39 on two free throws by Nikki Sammartino with 1:57 to go. Kate Tobie put MSU back in front with a foul shots and Snow connected from long range for a 43-39 lead. Williams answered with a three for Rutgers-Newark but Sire's jumper with four seconds allowed Montclair State to hold a 45-42 lead after three quarters.
Simmons opened the fourth with a basket and the teams went scoreless for nearly three minutes before a layup from Williams put Rutgers-Newark ahead, 46-45 with 6:11 remaining. Krauss answered with a three at the other end to regain the lead for Montclair and Sire added a layup before Snow hit from behind the arc for a 53-46 lead with 4:51 left.
Williams kept it close for Rutgers-Newark with a jumper however Snow hit the trifecta again boosting the lead to 56-48 with just over four minutes remaining. Snow would come up big for Montclair again only this time on the glass pulling down an offensive rebound with 2:11 left. The reserve kicked the ball out to Krauss on the right wing who promptly drilled a three for a 59-48 lead.
MSU returns to action on Saturday, January 30 taking on Ramapo College at the Panzer Athletic Center beginning at 3:00 pm. Montclair will also honor Dr. Catherine Paskert, the first head coach in program history, during a halftime ceremony. MSU will dedicate its team room in honor of the MSU Athletic Hall of Famer, who passed away in July. Paskert led Montclair State from 1965-75 overseeing the program;'s transition from a club sport to a varsity sport and compiled a 75-17 record from 1969-1975 winning three New Jersey State championships in addition to making five appearance in the Middle Atlantic Regional Tournament.
