BOSTON, Mass. -- Alicia Brown and Olivia Shaw accounted for nearly half (29) of the University of New England total, as the Nor'easters chalked up a 62-42 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball victory over Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday evening (Jan. 27) at Tansey Gymnasium.
UNE (15-3, 11-0 CCC) has come out on top of every outing in 2016 (10 contests), and now owns a 17-game win streak in the series with the Leopards (6-12, 2-9 CCC). The Nor'easters are ranked at No. 25 in the latest WBCA Coaches Top 25 Poll, and are receiving votes (#34) in the D3hoops.com Poll.
Brown registered a game-high 17 points, and Shaw tallied 12 more on 6-of-8 shooting. Brooke Flaherty had eight points and six boards off the bench. Sadie DiPierro and Meghan Gribbin each added seven points, while DiPierro grabbed eight rebounds and Gribbin dished out seven assists.
The Nor'easters held Wentworth to 25 percent field-goal accuracy in the match, and just 2-of-20 on three-point attempts.
Leading the way for the Leopards was Rachael Camara with 14 points and game-best 11 rebounds. Haley Sabino went for 12 points and nine caroms, and Carly Rodgers finished with 11 points.
UNE was up 21-18 late in the 2nd quarter before posting the last seven to gain a 10-point cushion at the break.
Though the gap stretched out to 17 (38-21) by the middle of the 3rd, Camera recorded her first six points of the match to help bring it back down to 41-32 in the final minute of the period. However, Alanna Vose hit her second trey in the waning seconds to restore the double-digit advantage for good.
Brown, Gribbin, and Shaw combined evenly for a 12-0 spurt in the 4th that established a 59-37 margin.
The Nor'easters return home to face Nichols College (2-9 CCC) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
