Huge Third Period Sends WildCats to Victory

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Randolph College women's basketball team outscored Randolph-Macon College by 18 points in the third period, on the way to defeating its Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rival 84-73 on Wednesday night.

The two teams went back and forth early on in the game, with the 'Cats taking an early 6-5 lead after a Rebecca Harvey layup.  R-MC responded with a small 7-4 sprint to take a lead.  However, Harvey then hit two from the stripe to take the 13-12 advantage.  Brie Holdren and Daijah Johnsoncombined to push the score to 17-12 with 2:16 left.  But the Yellow Jackets scored the final four of the period, cutting the deficit to one.

The second period proved to be another back and forth affair.  Lauren Vugteveen took the lead back for Randolph-Macon, but Korin Harris scored four in a row.  Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets answered with six straight to take a three-point lead.  Abigail Bullins followed the run with a three of her own to once again tie the score.  R-MC went on two more runs during the period, establishing five-point leads twice, but Randolph answered on each occasion.  The WildCats cut the deficit to one at 32-31, and then tied the score right before the half at 36, as Holdren knocked down her second three of the game.

Coming out of the intermission, the 'Cats established the lead they would not relinquish the rest of the game.  Bullins started it off with a three, and over the next three minutes Randolph went on a 13-2 run.  Harvey tallied four points, while Taylor Samuels, Harris, and Jacqueline Hockmanadded two as well.

Following a two-minute scoreless stretch, the WildCats went back on the offensive.  Holdren hit another shot from deep.  It helped keep the momentum with the hosts.  The Yellow Jackets scored four, but Samuels stopped their streak with four of her own.  R-MC hit four free throws over the final two minutes, but Randolph responded with four baskets, to take a 64-46 lead into the fourth period.

The fourth period started with the teams trading points on both ends.  Alexis Calloway countered a run by the visitors with six points of her own, as Bullins found her around the basket for a couple of easy buckets.  However, Randolph-Macon continued to fight back.  The Yellow Jackets hit several deep threes over the final few minute, and started to foul the 'Cats to prolong the game.  However, the WildCats made their free throws and left the RAD Center with the 84-73 win.

Bullins led five 'Cats in double-figures with a game-high 18 points.  Harvey scored 14, Harris and Holdren each had 13, and Hockman finished with 10.  Harris and Harvey each pulled down nine boards, as the WildCats outrebounded their opponents by seven.  The hosts also outshot the visitors by eight percent (46-38).

Katie Anderson finished with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.  Hannah Livermon added 15 for the Yellow Jackets (8-9 overall, 4-5 ODAC).

Randolph (4-14, 2-7) will ends its two-game stay at home on Saturday.  The WildCats will play the second game of a doubleheader, taking on Bridgewater College (4-5, 8-9) at 4:30 p.m.  The Randolph College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and the two basketball teams will sponsor Cancer Awareness Games.  Both team will wear green and teal shirts in warm-ups to raise awareness for Lymphoma and Ovarian Cancer.
