WESTON, Mass. – Sophomore guard Shannon Hayes (Billerica, Mass.) scored 18 points, grabbed nine rebounds and made four steals as the Regis College women's basketball team's winning streak reached six games with a 76-50 victory over New England Collegiate Conference opponent Southern Vermont College on Saturday afternoon. The victory, improves the Crimson and Gold's record to 13-2, 9-0 NECC and the loss drops the Mountaineers to 9-7, 6-3 NECC.
The game was close after the first two periods as the Pride held a 31-24 advantage at the break, but the hosts outscored the visitors 40-26 in the second half. Sophomore forward Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) tallied a game-high 22 points scoring, 10 of her 22 markers from the charity stripe. Junior Amanda Hawkesworth (Abington, Mass.) recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-best 12 caroms.
Regis started out the contest scoring the first seven points with Stone converting two free throws, Hayes burying a three-ball and Hawkesworth finding Stone underneath for an easy two. Mountaineer senior forward Shaniquewa Barnes (Landover, Md.) responded with an old fashioned three point play to cut the Pride lead to 7-3. Regis built the lead to a first quarter high of nine points after Hayes knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the key. SVC closed out the frame outscoring the Pride by a 9-3 margin with Amber Flagg (Windsor, Conn.) connecting on two shots from downtown to cut the deficit to three, 15-12 at the end of the first.
Both squads traded buckets throughout the first five minutes of the second quarter before; the guests strung together an 8-1 run to get within a point, 25-24 with 2:02 to play. Regis wouldn't let SVC get any closer as they scored the next six points, with four coming from Stone via the free throw line and a layup and two from sophomore forward Linsay Bumila (Raynham, Mass.) which put the Pride up seven, 31-24 at the break.
Regis put the game out of reach in the second half as they ended the third period outscoring the Mountaineers 18-10 to go up 55-41 and held SVC to 3-of-11 (27.3%) shooting in the final stanza to take the contest 76-50.
The Pride shot 11-of-14 (78.6%) from the free throw line in the fourth quarter which helped ice the game and a potential Mountaineer comeback.
Linsay Bumila scored seven points off the bench and snagged four rebounds, while Alyssa Lanpher (Princeton, Mass.) scored six points, grabbed five rebounds and made two thefts. Backcourt partner Mikayla Murphy (Attleboro, Mass.) handed out a team-high six assists, came down with five boards and made three steals.
Amber Flagg led the SVC offense with 14 points on 3-of-5 shooting from three-point land while Shaniquewa Barnes scored 10 points and snagged seven caroms before fouling out.
Regis and SVC return to the hardwood on Tuesday. The Pride host Wheelock College at 8:00 p.m. and the Mountaineers travel to Newbury at 7:00 p.m.
