(WAYNESBURG, Pa.) – Senior guard/forward Sydney Moss (St. Albans, W.Va./Boone County (Ky.)) scored a season-high 41 points tonight (Friday, January 22, 2016) to lead the top-ranked Thomas More College women's basketball team to a 119-80 win over Waynesburg University in a Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) game at the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania.
With the win, the Saints remain undefeated at 16-0 overall and 10-0 in the PAC. With the loss, the Yellow Jackets fall to 9-8 overall and 7-3 in the PAC.
In six games against Waynesburg, Moss averages 38.6 points per game, including a 41.0 point per game average inside the Rudy Marisa Fieldhouse. Her four top-scoring outputs during her collegiate career have all come against Waynesburg as she scored a NCAA Division III record 63 points on February 28, 2014, 42 points on December 3, 2014, tonight's 41 points and 40 points on February 1, 2014.
Thomas More jumped out to an early 6-2 lead when freshman guard Madison Temple (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) made a three-point with 8:22 to play in the first quarter. Waynesburg answered with a 9-5 run to tie the game at 11-11 with 6:16 to play in the first quarter when Maura Bobby made a lay-up. The Saints closed out the first quarter on a 23-9 run to lead 34-20 after one quarter when senior guard Olivia Huber (Woodlawn, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) made two free-throws with 14-seconds to play in the quarter.
The Saints opened the second quarter on a 24-14 run to increase the lead to 58-34 when Moss converted an old fashion three-point play with 2:19 to play in the quarter. The Yellow Jackets closed out the second quarter on a 9-6 cut the lead to 64-43 at halftime when Julie Deklaven three-pointer with 1:04 to play in the quarter.
Thomas More out-scored Waynesburg 30-19 in the third quarter to lead 94-62 after three quarter and out-scored the Yellow Jackets 25-18 in the fourth quarter to cruise to the 119-80 victory.
The Saints owned a 52-32 advantage on points in the paint, 31-5 in points off turnovers and 24-9 in second chance points.
Moss was joined in double-figure scoring by sophomore guard Abby Owings (Independence, Ky./Simon Kenton) with 17 points and sophomore forward Nikki Kiernan (Cold Springs, Ky./Newport Central Catholic) with 12 points. Kiernan led the team on the boards with 11 rebounds and blocked shots with three. Huber led the team in steals with four.
Thomas More returns to action on Wednesday (January 27) when it travels to Grove City, Pennsylvania to play Grove City College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside the Grove City College Arena.
