After seeing its four-game winning streak snapped on Saturday, the Lancaster Bible women's basketball got back into the win column on Tuesday night as the Chargers defeated Valley Forge, 83-61 in Phoenixville, Pa. Lancaster Bible improves to 8-3 with the victory and finishes its 2015-16 five-game non-conference slate with a 3-2 record.
How it Happened: Lancaster Bible got off to a slow start and trailed the Patriots (5-7), 10-6 midway through the first quarter. Back-to-back buckets from Aubrey Folger and Kirsten Webster tied the game at 10-10 and the teams would eventually end the first quarter knotted at 18-18.
For as slowly as the Chargers began the first quarter, it was the complete opposite in the second quarter as Lancaster Bible opened the first 4:18 on a 12-0 run and took a 30-18 lead. The scoring run was a total team effort as five different players recorded points. Lancaster Bible continued to pour it on and eventually took a 49-27 lead into halftime and outscored the Patriots, 31-9 in the second quarter. The Chargers recorded 12 baskets in the second quarter and nine of them came via the layup as Lancaster Bible turned up the defensive pressure and forced six Valley Forge turnovers.
The Chargers opened the third quarter on a 15-5 run over the first 4:27 and took a 32-point lead at 64-32. The Patriots used a 14-0 run over the next four minutes to close the gap to 18 points, but the Chargers scored the final four points of the quarter to regain their 22-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
By the Numbers: Lancaster Bible shot 33-of-69 (47.8 percent) from the floor, including 19-of-35 (54.3 percent) in the first half...Senior Aubrey Folger had 23 of her game-high 27 points in the first half and added eight rebounds and two blocks...Fellow senior Katy Stover had 18 points, six rebounds and six steals as well for the Chargers, while senior Shanice Smith chipped in with 15 points and 11 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive glass...Junior Krissy Pennell had eight points and seven assists...Junior Marisa Jo Abts added seven points and three rebounds and Alyssa Bowen added two points and two boards...The Chargers forced 24 turnovers and held a 33-26 rebounding advantage.
The Coach Says: "I thought we came out a little flat, but we put a 2-2-1 press on in the second quarter that really got us going," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Katelyn Vanderhoff said. "We were able to capitalize on their mistakes and get some fast break opportunities."
On the team's resolve throughout the game..."Our team responded well when they started to make some difficult shots, but we never put our heads down and kept grinding," Vanderhoff said.
On the overall performance of the team..."I liked our effort and our execution," Vanderhoff said. "We will need to come out ready this week as we have two big conference games ahead of us."
Extra! Extra!: Lancaster Bible is now 45-36 all-time against Valley Forge...The Chargers have won the past five meetings between the two teams...Folger is averaging 22.2 points per game which leads the NEAC...Folger's 56.7 shooting percentage is also tops in the conference...Stover has 28 of Lancaster Bible's 41 made 3-pointers this season.
Up Next: Lancaster Bible will host Keuka on Thursday night at 8 p.m...The game was originally scheduled for Friday, but has been moved up due to the impending snow this weekend...The contest against Wells, which was originally scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m., has been moved to Friday at 4 p.m.
