WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College women's basketball team started out strong and never looked back as they blew past New England Collegiate Conference opponent Becker College 77-42 on Thursday night at Higgins Court. With the win, Regis improves to 10-2, 6-0 NECC and the loss drops the Hawks to 2-11, 1-5 NECC.
Amanda Hawkesworth (Abington, Mass.) led the Pride offense with a game-high 20 points while also corralling eight caroms and dishing out three assists. Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) added 12 points and 11 boards which was her second double-double in as many games and her sixth of the season. Stone also led the Pride defensive unit with three blocked shots.
Shannon Hayes (Billerica, Mass.) scored 12 points on 5-of-10 (50%) shooting and grabbed nine rebounds. The Regis bench also played its part scoring 24 points with freshman forward Sam D'Angelo (Woburn, Mass.) leading the second unit with a season-best nine points in 17 minutes of play.
Regis started out the contest fast opening the game with a 13-1 run capped off by an Amanda Hawkesworth layup. Becker would claw back into the game using three shots from downtown that was part of a 10-2 run. Freshman forward Adrianna Dowdy (East Haven, Conn.) hit two shots from deep that cut the deficit to four, 15-11 with 2:05 left in the quarter. Regis responded with an 8-0 run of their own, over the final two minutes of play to regain a double-digit lead at the end of the first quarter.
The second stanza was more of the same for the Pride as they outscored the visitors 13-4 before the break and headed into the half with a commanding 36-15 advantage, a lead they would never relinquish.
Adrianna Dowdy led the Hawks with a double-double scoring 13 points and snagging 10 rebounds. Tanaisha Espino (Southbridge, Mass.) added 13 points off the bench in 23 minutes of play. Mikayla Murphy (Attleboro, Mass.) filled the stat sheet for the Pride as she scored six points, handed out seven assists, and grabbed five boards. Linsay Bumila (Raynham, Mass.) scored five points and came down with four caroms in 12 minutes of play off the bench.
Regis returns to the hardwood on Saturday when they travel to NECC foe Elms for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off. Becker hosts Bay Path on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
