Lake Forest Holds Off Monmouth, Improves to 3-2 in MWC Play

Senior guard Michelle Ricolcol and forward K.C. Stralka combined for 35 points and 21 rebounds as the Forester women's basketball team defeated Monmouth College 69-64 at home Saturday evening.

Ricolcol led Lake Forest with 24 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and added four steals. Stralka finished with 11 points and a team-high 13 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. She also blocked four shots to raise her career total to 89, which ties her with Shannon Clerkin (2001-05) for second place in program history. Sophomore guard Kelsey Schmitt also reached double figures with 10 points and junior forward Brittany Avonts with 11 rebounds.

Monmouth shot 33 percent and Lake Forest 32 percent from the field. The Foresters outscored their guests 20-17 from the foul line and committed just 14 turnovers, seven fewer than the Fighting Scots.

Lake Forest's only lead of the first quarter was 8-7 and the home team trailed 13-9 at the buzzer. Five different Foresters scored during an 11-0 run to begin the second period and Lake Forest extended the lead to 11 points (32-21) at halftime.

The margin grew to as many as 15 points early in the third quarter and was 10 (50-40) at the end of the period. The Scots, however, outscored the Foresters 15-2 during the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to take a 55-52 advantage. The lead changed hands five times over the next three minutes with a free throw by Avonts with 1:45 to play giving Lake Forest the lead for good. The home team surrendered just one point during the final two minutes of the game to secure the victory.

Lake Forest is now 4-5 overall and 3-2 in Midwest Conference play this season. Monmouth fell to to 1-10 overall and 0-6 in the league.

The Foresters' next game will be played at Beloit College Wednesday night at 7:30.
