SCHENECTADY, NY -- Abby Katz had career highs of 15 points and 13 rebounds and the Union College women's basketball team improved to 4-0 in the Liberty League with a 56-40 win over Skidmore at the Viniar Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. Union, winners of seven of eight, improved to 9-2 overall. Skidmore is now 6-6 and 1-3 in the league.
Union is off to the best start since the 2003-04 team started 18-2.
Katz recorded her second straight double-double and made seven of eight shots from the floor. She also added two steals. Natalie Leone had 13 points and seven rebounds andErin Lyons also had seven rebounds with three steals. Both teams had 45 rebounds. Union shot 35% but held Skidmore to 23% shooting, including 21% in the second half.
Kelly Donnelly pulled down a game high 15 rebounds and had seven points and four steals to lead the Thoroughbreds. Migle Vilunaite added six points.
Union led 14-9 at the end of the first and 24-22 at halftime. The Dutchwomen outscored the Thoroughbreds, 23-9 in the third quarter. In that quarter, the Dtucwhome started down by two but went up by 12 for a 36-24 lead with 4:09 left. Lyons' layup capped a 12-2 run in a span of 5:51. Union led by 18 after two free throws by Leone with 18 seconds left in the quarter, and led by as many as 19 (55-36 with 2:38 left).
The Dutchwomen are back in action Tuesday night at 6 p.m. for a Liberty League at RIT.
