EMU Outlasts Bridgewater In Double-Overtime

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Eastern Mennonite outscored Bridgewater College 29-17 in the fourth period to force overtime and the Royal finally gained the upper hand in the second overtime session to defeat the Eagles 112-107 in an ODAC classic Tuesday evening at Yoder Arena.

Bridgewater (5-6, 1-2 ODAC) came out firing on all cylinders to start the game and led by five after the first 10 minutes.

Cassidy Burkholder put the Eagles on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer on BC's first possession and Briana Moore added a 15-footer for a quick 5-0 lead.

Eastern Mennonite (9-2, 2-1 ODAC) scored the next six points, but a three-point play by Jessica Lam put the Eagles back on top 8-6.

A driving layup by Alicia Ygarza tied the score before a Lam 3-pointer gave Bridgewater an 11-10 lead. Sa'Mone Moore and Lindsey Krisak netted buckets for a one-point EMU lead, but a layup by Oshene Kelly and a jumper by Burkholder pushed the Eagles back into the lead at 15-12.

After a jumper by EMU's Jazmine Carter, Burkholder scored the next four points for a 19-15 Eagles lead after one period.

Bridgewater went 4-for-4 from beyond the arc on its first four possessions of the second period to take its biggest lead of the first half. Bridgewater's Moore knocked down the first trey and following an EMU turnover Lam hit from long range, making the score 25-15.

The Royals turned it over again on its next possession and Jessi Strom knocked down a 3-pointer to make it 28-15. After a missed shot by the Royals, Burkholder swished a long 3-ball for a 31-14 lead with 7:30 left in the second period.

EMU responded with a 9-0 run to cut the margin down to eight, but two buckets by Sydni Carey and a layup by Kelly pushed the margin back to double digits, 37-23, with 4:13 left in the half.

The Royals once again trimmed the deficit back to eight at 39-31 before an 8-0 spurt by the Eagles doubled their lead. Jessalyn Monday swished a 15-footer and Burkholder added a layup for a 43-31 BC lead. After a Royals turnover, Carey scored on a 15-footer, making the score 45-31. Two foul shots by Monday pushed the margin to 16 points, 47-31, with 43 seconds remaining.

Jess Rheinheimer worked inside for a layup, but Monday countered with a 17-footer to keep the lead at 16. EMU's Krisak scored on a layup in the closing seconds to trim Bridgewater's advantage to 49-35 at the half.

Both teams struggled to find the range early in the second half. A bucket by Ygarza pulled the Royals to within 50-37 early in the third period and it was almost two minutes later when Burkholder scored to give the Eagles a 52-37 lead.

Another two minutes passed without a score until a layup by Monday at the 5:39 mark put the Eagles ahead, 54-37, matching their biggest lead of the game.

The Eagles still led by 15, 57-42, when a 7-0 EMU spurt capped by a Rheinheimer 3-pointer pulled the Royals to within eight, 57-49.

A 3-pointer by Bridgewater's Moore pushed the lead back to double digits and the teams traded points until Moore beat the buzzer with a long 3-pointer, giving the Eagles a 66-54 lead heading into the final period.

A 3-pointer by Lam at the 7:41 mark of the fourth period put the Eagles lead at 71-57. The Eagles still led by double digits, 77-66, when Gabrielle Spinner scored from the paint with 4:51 remaining.

The Royals then put together a quick 7-0 spurt to pull within four, 77-73, with 3:16 left to play.

Layups by Burkholder and Strom pushed the margin back to eight, but EMU answered with buckets by Ygarza and Rheinheimer to trail by four, 81-77, with 1:30 on the clock.

After an Eagles' missed shot, Rheinheimer scored to make it a two-point game. Bridgewater then turned the ball over and Ygarza converted at the offensive end to pull the Royals even, 81-81.

Bridgewater regained the lead on a Burkholder bucket with 23 left, but Ygarza drove the lane for the tying basket with six ticks left on the clock.

Following a timeout, the Eagles got the ball to Burkholder and her shot from the lane bounced on the rim twice before falling away as the two teams headed for overtime with the score knotted at 83-83.

EMU struck first in the first OT with a 3-pointer by Myneshia Walker, but Moore answered with a 15-footer to pull the Eagles to within a point.

A layup by Walker put the Royals' lead at three, but a free throw by Lam and a layup by Monday tied the score at 88-88 with three minutes to play.

Moore put the Eagles back on top with a layup, but EMU's Carter drove the lane for two, tying the score at 90-90.

The teams traded empty trips until two foul shots by Rheinheimer put the Royals on top 92-90 with 1:19 to play.

Burkholder was fouled on Bridgewater's next trip and the Eagles senior made both free throws to tie the score at 92-92 with one minute remaining.

After Rheinheimer missed from in close, the Eagles had two shots to regain the lead, but they were unable to convert. This time the Royals had possession with a chance to win, but Walker's 3-pointer with two seconds left was just long as the teams headed to a second overtime with the score tied at 92-92.

EMU's Moore scored the first five points of the second OT, but layups by Carey and Lam trimmed the Royals' lead to one, 97-96.

Carter then knocked down a 3-pointer and Rheinheimer scored from in close to put the Royals on top 102-96 with 3:23 left.

Strom scored on a runner in the lane, but another 3-pointer by Walker put the EMU lead at seven, 105-98, with just 1:15 left.

A layup by Carey with 53 seconds left pulled the Eagles to within four, but they would get no closer as the Royals escaped with the 112-107 victory.

Burkholder's double-double of 24 points and 11 rebounds paced the Eagles as five players scored in double figures. Burkholder also tallied four assists and six steals. Lam scored 23 points and freshman guard Moore added a career-high 20. Carey, BC's other freshman guard, also netted a career-high with 12 points. Monday came off the bench to chip in with 10 points.

Rheinheimer, EMU's senior All-American, put up 35 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Ygarza posted a triple-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Walker finished with 19 points and Moore scored 13 for the Royals.
