Strong Third Quarter Leads Mariners Past John Jay

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) broke Maine Maritime's single-game record for most field goals made in a game (13) and scored a career-high 29 points, to lift Maine Maritime Academy to a 61-49 non-conference victory over John Jay College on Sunday afternoon.

The Mariners took an early 14-10 lead to end the first quarter, but the Bloodhounds held the Mariners to just five points in the second quarter to take a 21-19 lead into the intermission.

Maine Maritime answered back strong in the third quarter, scoring 26 points in the third period to take a 45-33 lead. The Mariners shot 60 percent from the field in the final two quarters to secure the 61-49 victory.

Felix led all players with her third-career double-double, with 29 points, 10 rebounds, a block and a steal, while Tess Clark (Spring, Texas) added nine points, a game-high five assists, three rebounds and a steal. Mikayla Charters (Newport, Maine) and Mackenzie Vosburgh (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) each added eight points for the Mariners.

Terri Chu and Josephine Diaz led the way for John Jay with 11 points apiece, while Victoria Royal led the Bloodhounds with nine rebounds.

The Mariners improve to 5-4 on the season, while John Jay falls to 3-8 overall. Maine Maritime will return to action on Tuesday, January 5 when they take on Manhattanville College at 1:00 p.m.
