Bridgewater Rolls To 85-65 Victory

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Bridgewater College shot 52.5 percent from the floor and placed three players in double figures Sunday afternoon to roll to an 85-65 victory over the Apprentice School in non-conference women's hoops action.

Jessica Lam hit 8-of-14 shots from the floor and led the Eagles with a game-high 23 points. Lam also added six rebounds and six steals. Cassidy Burkholder flirted with a triple-double as she scored 16 points to go along with nine rebounds and seven assists. Freshman guard Briana Moore added 13 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles.

Bridgewater took control from the opening tip as the Eagles outscored the Builders 31-18 in the first period.

A Burkholder layup put the Eagles on the board, but a 3-pointer by Apprentice guard Hayley Marshall gave the hosts their only lead of the game at 3-2.

Lam knocked down a 3-pointer for Bridgewater before a layup by the Builders' Courtney White tied the score at 5-5.

The Eagles then reeled off the next seven points to take the lead for good. Lam scored on a layup and Moore added a jumper to make the score 9-5. Senior sharpshooter Jessi Strom followed with a 3-pointer for a 12-5 Eagles lead with 6:32 remaining in the opening period.

A layup by Lam at the 4:31 mark pushed Bridgewater's margin to double figures for the first time, 22-11.

A bucket by Apprentice's Quanisha Bruce pulled the Builders to within eight and the teams then traded points until a jumper by Burkholder and two foul shots by Lam put the Eagles on top by 12 points, 28-16, with 1:25 left in the opening period.

Lam added 1-of-2 from the foul line before two free throws by the Builders' Ylexzis Traeger cut the Eagles lead to 29-18. Moore knocked down a jumper with just seven seconds left, giving the Eagles a 31-18 advantage after one period of action.

The teams traded points for the first five minutes of the second period before a 3-pointer by Lam and a jumper by Moore pushed the Eagles' lead to 15 points, 43-28.

Bria Hill hit a jumper for Apprentice, but Moore answered with a layup to keep the margin at 15. Traeger swished a short jumper for the Builders before layups by Tyler Pinder and Melynda Boren sent the Eagles to the locker room with a comfortable 49-32 lead.

Apprentice sliced the deficit to 12 early in the third period, but Bridgewater responded with an 8-0 run to lead by 20. Lam scored five points during the run and Moore drained a 3-pointer, giving the Eagles a 59-39 lead with 6:08 left in the third quarter.

The lead swelled to 23 when Lam hit a jumper and Jessalyn Monday made 1-of-2 at the foul line for a 67-44 Bridgewater advantage. Bruce scored for the Builders, but Moore countered with a layup to send the Eagles to the final period with a 69-46 lead.

The victory evened the Eagles record at 5-5 while Apprentice dropped to 4-9 with the loss.

Bridgewater returns to conference action Tuesday evening when the Eagles make the short trip to Harrisonburg to play rival Eastern Mennonite. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
