Bayamón, Puerto Rico -- Concordia University Wisconsin defeated No. 15/17 University of New England women's basketball team in overtime, 48-45, on Monday morning (Dec. 21) at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez.
The Falcons rebound from their first setback of the season the day before to improve to 7-1, while a second straight loss puts the Nor'easters back to 5-3 on the year.
After a fast start by UNE, CUW led grabbed the lead in the middle of the 2nd quarter and held it well into the 4th. The opening basket of the period went to the Nor'easters to pull within one (34-33), but five of the next seven went for the Falcons (39-35).
With 4:40 left, Sadie DiPierro hit a three-pointer to again close the gap to one, but after empty possessions both ways, Samantha Blissett restored the four-point cushion (42-38) for CUW at 2:58 with a deep trey late in the shot clock.
UNE got those three points back over the next two trips, and Lauren Hayden swung Big Blue in front (43-42) with 0:42 on the clock. Meghan Gribbin was then fouled in the act of a steal on the left wing, and converting the second try made it 44-42 with 20 ticks remaining in regulation.
The Falcons got Blissett up at the top of the arc for a drive to the right, and she got behind the defense for the tying layup with 11 seconds to go. Gribbin had a double-clutch runner spin off the iron in the waning seconds to send the game to overtime.
The Nor'easters added a free throw early in the extra session to go in front, and held that cushion for two minutes until Briana Wagner drained two freebies of her own for CUW.
Back-to-back turnovers and a missed jumper for UNE made no impact on the one-point deficit. Likewise, the Falcons could not extend the spread, through were able to secure a pair of offensive rebounds and Marciarae' Harmon eventually cashed in wtih a put-back jumper with 10 seconds left. Big Blue's attempt to tie at the buzzer was off the mark.
The teams went a combined 1-for-14 from the field in the bonus five minutes -- indicative of the final shooting percentages for both squads, with CUW at 33 percent and UNE at 30 percent.
The Nor'easters also went 11-of-23 at the charity stripe and were hampered by 23 turnovers. The Falcons overcame 30 of their own, while leaving eight points at the line (15 of 23).
Wagner led all players with 15 points and 12 boards for CUW, and Blissett registered 12 points.
UNE received 13 points from Alicia Brown. Hayden contributed 11 points, seven rebounds, and six steals.
From the opening tip, Brown had seven as the Nor'easters established an 11-3 cushion after 6:12. The Falcons rallied to trail by just one at the end of the 1st (11-10), and the teams went cold for more than four minutes to begin the 2nd before Blissett gave CUW a 17-15 edge with 4:26 before halftime.
The CUW advantage reached 10 prior to the break (27-19), and peaked at 12 (31-19) before a 12-3 run down the stretch of the 3rd brought UNE back within striking distance. Hayden tallied seven in the span.
