Point Guards and Defense Sparks WPI to Seventh Straight Triumph

WORCESTER – Point guards Yasmeen Luna (North Providence, RI) and Stasha Greenalch(Newinton, CT) both reached double figures in scoring and the WPI defense limited King's (PA) to just two first half field goals as the Engineers knocked off the Monarchs 54-43 at the Daytona Beach Shootout on Sunday afternoon.  

The win is the seventh straight for WPI, its longest since the 2010-2011 season, and improves the Crimson's and Gray's program-best start to 9-1. King's dips to 7-2 with the defeat. 

The Monarchs made the their initial field goal of the game on a Alexis Steeber (Shickshinny, PA) layup just 17 seconds into the contest before the WPI defense held to King's to 1-of-15 shooting for the rest of half.  The Engineers rattled off the next 10 points, including a pair of baskets by Priscilla Dunphy (Barrington, RI), to take a lead they would not relinquish.  After Maggie Michael (Dallas, PA) beat the first quarter buzzer for King's to make it 18-6, the Engineers rattled off the first seven points of the second quarter, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Haili Welton(Southbury, CT), to put the game safely out of reach. 

Luna and Greenalch each finished with 10 points, with Luna draining 5-of-7 attempts from the field and Greenalch canning all six of her free throw attempts.  Dunphy chipped in with nine points while Lisa Mendez (Yonkers, NY) and Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) added seven and six respectively.  The trip of Biney, Tess Nogueira (Merrimac, MA) and Maura Buckley (Melrose, MA) all hauled five boards as the Engineers enjoyed a 44-26 edge on the glass, including an 18-3 bulge in offensive rebounds.   

Rachael DeTore (Asbury, NJ) tallied game-high scoring honors for the Monarchs with six andKasey Seitz (Red Lion, NJ), Jennifer Fabian (Doylestown, PA), and Cayle Spencer (Sweet Valley, PA) contributed five points apiece.  Sara Krupinski (Montrose, PA) was credited with three of King's four assists on the day. 

WPI concludes action in the Daytona Beach Shootout Monday morning, facing Alvernia (PA) at 10am while King's meets Western Connecticut at 2pm.
