Cortland Women Hold Off SUNY Poly, 62-52

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Senior Caysea Cohen (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) registered team highs of 15 points, four assists and six steals as Cortland defeated visiting SUNY Polytechnic, 62-52, in a non-league matchup.

Junior Danielle Levine (Holbrook/Sachem North) added 14 points and seven rebounds and junior Stephanie Rice (Duanesburg) finished with 11 points and five boards for the Red Dragons (6-3). Junior Alyssa Crosby (Brier Hill/Hammond) chipped in with seven points and five rebounds.

SUNY Poly (4-2) was led by Geena Gallo's 16 points. She also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots. Lauren Knowles totaled 12 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks and Paige Gallo ended with eight points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Cortland led 14-10 after the first quarter and went on a 10-2 run over the final five minutes of the second quarter to take a 28-16 halftime lead. The Red Dragons steadily built their lead in the third quarter and led by as many as 22 points at 44-22 after a Rice layup with 2:28 left in the period.

The Wildcats, however, scored the last seven points of the quarter, five by Paige Gallo, to close within 44-29. They then opened the fourth quarter on a 13-6 run, with the final six points on buckets by Knowles, and trailed only 50-42 with 5:29 remaining.

Cortland eventually took a 12-point lead with 2:50 left, but SUNY Poly scored six straight and was down 54-48 with 1:30 on the clock. Levine hit a jumper with just under a minute left to push the lead to eight, and Cohen hit 6-of-6 from the line over the final 36 seconds to secure the victory.

Cortland is idle until a SUNYAC contest at New Paltz on January 5 at 2 p.m.
