ST. PETERSBURG, Florida -- A sluggish second half did in Alverno College as the Inferno lost its final game of the St. Pete Classic, 71-61, to Wesley College Saturday morning at Eckerd College's McArthur Center.

Mackenzie Mathies layup with under a minute to play in the first quarter gave Alverno (5-6) its largest lead of the game at nine points, but the Wolverines (2-7) trimmed the Inferno lead to just two, 28-26, by the halftime break.

Wesley then surged to a 22-point third quarter and led by four at the end of the period, a lead that wouldn't be relinquished.

Brooke McBain led Alverno with 12 points, Mathies had 10, while Katelyn Bartlett and Tessa Mersbergerchipped in nine apiece.

Brionna Johnson led the Wolverines with game-highs of 16 points and 15 rebounds.

The game wraps up the Inferno's nonconference slate for the season with a 3-2 record in non-league play.

The new year is the next time Alverno is in action as it caps off its current five-game road swing with a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference contest at Edgewood College on January 2.
