Rams Drop Opening Game at Hilton Scranton Poinsettia Classic

Scranton, Penn. - In the opening game of the Hilton Scranton Poinsettia Classic, the Farmingdale State women's basketball team fell, 91-59, to Eastern University on Tuesday. In the tournaments other game, #16 Scranton defeated Johnson & Whales (RI) 66-48.

Eastern (7-1) held an early 13-2 lead but the Rams (4-6) stormed back with a 14-0 run to go ahead by three, 16-13, with 4:15 left in the first quarter.

Trailing 20-17, the Eagles used an 11-0 run to open up a 28-20 advantage early in the second quarter. Farmingdale State answered with back-to-back layups from sophomore guard Tyra Harrison (Baldwin, N.Y.) to close within four until eight straight points by Eastern put the Eagles ahead 36-24. Eastern took a 42-30 lead into the halftime break.

Harrison tallied 21 first half points for FSC, while junior forward Emily Lavin (Port Monmouth, N.J.) had 13 points on 6-of-6 shooting and eight rebounds for Eastern.

After a Charnae Jenkins (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) 3-pointer cut the Rams deficit to 49-41 with 5:22 remaining in the third, the Eagles closed the quarter on a 16-5 run to extend their lead to 65-46.

Farmingdale State was outscored 26-13 in the fourth quarter as Eastern earned the 91-59 opening round victory.

Harrison led all scorers with 35 points, while sophomore guard Marissa Monaco (Bohemia, N.Y.) had nine points and five rebounds.

Lavin recorded a double-double with a team-high 15 points and 10 boards, while also adding a game-high six blocks for the Eagles.

The Rams will square off against Johnson & Whales in the consolation game later today at 3:00 p.m.
