Women's basketball tops Illinois Wesleyan behind big first half

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team shot 60.0 percent on its way to a 26-point halftime lead and coasted to a 68-50 road win over Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Dennie Bridges Court at the IWU Shirk Center.

UW-Stevens Point (5-2) shot 15-for-25 in the opening half to outscore Illinois Wesleyan (3-5) 23-10 in each of the first two quarters and led by at least 10 the rest of the way. The win was the Pointers' fourth in the last five meetings with the Titans since 2001.

Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) and Allie Miceli (Marseilles, IL/Ottawa Township) each scored 15 points in the win to lead UW-Stevens Point. Anklam was 6-for-9 from the field, including 3-for-3 from behind the arc, and dished out five assists in her highest-scoring game of the season. Miceli made all five of her shots from the field, was 5-for-6 from the free-throw line and grabbed seven rebounds.

After the Pointers led 9-7 early, UW-Stevens Point went on a 12-0 run over a span of 4:26 to take a commanding 21-7 lead. Five UWSP players scored during the first-quarter run, led by four from Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London), who finished with eight points and nine rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench.

UW-Stevens Point stretched a 23-10 lead after the first quarter to 34-10 in the first 2:30 of the second by scoring the first 11 points of the quarter. The Pointers made three consecutive three-pointers, two by Anklam and one by Sarah Gamillo (Colby, WI/Colby), to start the run and Roland capped it with a layup.

The Pointers led by as many as 44-13 in the first half after going 5-for-7 from behind the arc and 11-for-12 from the free-throw line. Miceli and Anklam combined for 20 of their 30 points in the first half.

Illinois Wesleyan climbed to within 10, 60-50, with 3:01 remaining in the fourth quarter after a 16-2 run. However, the Pointers held the Titans scoreless the rest of the way and scored the final eight points of the game.

Rebekah Ehresman scored a game-high 18 points for Illinois Wesleyan, while Molly McGraw added 15. The Titans shot 28.3 percent (17-for-60) from the field, including 3-for-21 (14.3 percent) from behind the arc.

UW-Stevens Point shot 51.1 percent (24-for-47) from the floor in the game in its best shooting performance of the season since the season opener against Finlandia. The Pointers held advantages in points in the paint (34-18), points off turnovers (22-6) and bench points (21-6) in the win.

UW-Stevens Point hosts Saint Mary's (Minn.) on Saturday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. at Berg Gym.
