Lady Reds Drop Third Straight With Loss To Coe, 71-61

KENOSHA, Wis. – The Carthage College women's basketball closed out their three-game home stand Wednesday, December 9th, falling to Coe College, 71-61, at Tarble Arena.

 

The loss is the Lady Reds' third straight, dropping to a record of 4-3 overall, while the Kohawks improved to 5-1 on the season.

 

Bailey Gilbert led four Lady Reds in double-figures with 16 points on the night, while Mandy Hozzian and Monica Massini added 12 and Morgan Harris scored 10. 

 

Massini had a team-high eight rebound for the Lady Reds and Harris had eight assists.

 

Carthage opened on fire from the field as the Lady Reds grabbed a 5-0 lead in the first couple minutes to start the game.  The Lady Reds shot a combined 8-of-14 from the field and 4-of-9 from three-point range, including 3-of-4 from Mandy Hozzian who led all scorers in the quarter with nine points to give Carthage a 20-15 lead. 

 

The Lady Reds cooled off in the second quarter, shooting only 3-of-14 from the field, while the Kohawks turned-up the heat, outscoring the Lady Reds and beginning to build on a 24-7 run to close-out the second quarter and open the third, eventually giving Coe a 39-30 lead, aided by five Carthage turnovers. 

 

Coe built-up a 15-point lead heading into the fourth quarter before Carthage began to chip away at it. 

A 15-6 Carthage run led by Morgan Harris cut the Coe lead to six, however a five point swing pushed the deficit back into double-figures, dooming the Lady Reds.

 

After shooting 57.1-percent to open the game in the first quarter, Carthage was held by the Coe defense to under 30-percent the over the final 30 minutes, while Coe finished shooting 45.8-percent for the game and nearly 40-percent from three.  Coe's Aleena Hobbs led all scorers in the game with 24 points.

 

The Lady Reds hit the road for the final four games of 2015, starting with a trip to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, Saturday, December 12th at 3:00 p.m. After that the Lady Reds will visit Olivet College on the 20th and then head out to Lad Vegas for the D3Hoops.com Classic December 28th and 29th.
