GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman Emma Dorshimer (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown) scored a season-high 27 points as Gettysburg College capped the first semester with a 72-62 win over visiting Shenandoah University in a non-conference women's basketball match up inside Bream Gym Wednesday night.
Gettysburg (4-2), which led by as many as 21 in the fourth quarter, received another big game from the freshman guard. Dorshimer finished one three-pointer shy of the school record by going 6-of-10 from distance. She was 9-of-17 overall from the field, adding seven rebounds, four assists, and three blocked shots. Over her last four outings, the Bullet first-year has averaged 21.3 points per game.
Shannon Kuhn, from nearby East Berlin, Pa., tallied 25 points and eight rebounds, while Erin French posted 11 points and 10 boards for Shenandoah (2-4).
Dorshimer spotted the hosts a 6-2 lead with a pair of three-pointers in the first quarter, but the Hornets quickly erased the deficit with a 9-0 run. Sophomore Emily Gibbons (Annapolis, Md./Severn School) knocked down a jumper at the end of the period to ignite a 12-0 run. A three-pointer by senior Kim Ryan (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) pushed the lead to 12 (28-16) with 4:01 left in the first half.
The advantage grew to 36-20 on Dorshimer's fourth three-pointer of the opening half before Shenandoah whittled the deficit down to 13 (36-23) at the break.
The Hornets chopped a 15-point lead down to five with a 10-0 run in the third quarter. Dorshimer helped Gettysburg quiet the threat, hitting a three-pointer from the top of the key at 5:45 to put the score at 43-35. The first-year would knock down another trey and add a pair of free throws to bump the advantage back to double-figures by the end of the third frame.
Gettysburg quickly put the game out of reach with a 15-6 run to open the fourth quarter. A three-pointer by freshman Shannon Tobin (Newark, Del./Caravel Academy) made it 67-46 with 5:42 to play.
Gibbons finished 7-of-9 from the floor on the way to 16 points. She also grabbed six rebounds. Freshman Teal Tasker (Chambersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) pulled down six boards and dished out seven assists.
The hosts shot 47.5 percent (29-of-61) from the floor and knocked down a season-high nine three-pointers. The Bullets out-scored the Hornets 30-22 in the paint and blocked eight shots.
Next up for Gettysburg is its own tournament slated for Jan. 3-4. The Bullets face Wilkes University in the first game at 2 p.m. with Mt. Aloysius College and Eastern University squaring off in the second game at 4.
