UMF Upsets Castleton in Conference Battle

CASTLETON, Vt. – The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball (2-4, 1-1) upset the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) preseason favorite, Castleton University (5-1, 1-1) with a hard fought, 76-72, win in conference action at Glenbrook Gymnasium on Friday evening.

Meghan Smith (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay Region) recorded her fifth double-double of the season and third in a row with 19 points and 11 rebounds. The senior made 11 free throws on 14 attempts,  grabbed three offensive boards and dished three assists. The Beavers had a total of three starters finish in double figures as Kelly Pomerleau (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) set a season-high with 15 points. Pomerleau was a perfect 4-for-4 from beyond the arc. Elizabeth Ferry (Winslow, Maine/Winslow) followed with a near double-double of her own with 14 points and eight rebounds. Ferry charted a game-high three blocks and out blocked the entire Spartans' team.

Castleton relied on a game-high 20 points from Ali Jones to match UMF basket-for-basket. Jones shot 7-for-10 from the floor and made three shots from long range. Lindsay Sabo also scored double digits with 16 points and recorded three steals.

The conference battle was back-and-forth for the nearly the entire 40 minutes with 14 ties and 11 lead changes. Like many games, this one came down to foul shots and the Beavers made 5-of-7 attempts in the final three minutes to put the game away.  

UMaine-Farmington plays part two of a NAC doubleheader on Saturday at Green Mountain College.
