The Lead: The Roanoke Women's Basketball team earned its first win of the 2015-16 season with a 74-69 ODAC victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday evening in Salem.
How it Happened
- RC got a game-high 20 points from Cary Beahm who made 9-of-12 shots from the field in the win.
- Kelsey Smith had 16 points off the bench for RC, while Bridget Holleran had 13 points and Jamella Foster chipped in with 11.
- Crystal Strother led three Marlins in double-figures with 13 points. Kelly Jones had 12 points and Alexis Platt had 11 in the loss.
- VWC came out strong, opening up a 20-9 edge on a Platt layup with 3:15 to go in the first quarter. The Maroons battled back with a 9-2 run to close the quarter that was capped by a buzzer beating three-point play by Smith.
- After RC tied the game at 22-22 early in the second quarter, VWC went on a 14-2 run, opening up a 36-24 advantage on Jayla Harris three-pointer with just over two minutes to go in the half.
- The Maroons would score seven of the final nine points of the half to cut its deficit to 38-31 at the intermission.
- RC outscored VWC 20-9 in the third period, taking a seven point lead on anAnna Carter bucket with 18 seconds to go.
- With the score tied at 67 with under two minutes to go in the game, RC got back-to-back baskets by Foster and Beahm to take the lead for good and got key free-throws from Smith and Morgan Hufford to ice the win.
