Trinity Women's Basketball Rolls Past New Rochelle In Betty Shabazz Tourney Opener

Brooklyn, N.Y. - Senior center Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) had 27 points, 13 rebounds, and three steals to lead the Trinity College Bantams to an 80-46 victory over the College of New Rochelle Blue Angels in the opening round of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Women's Basketball Tournament at Medgar Evers College this evening.  Trinity improves to 3-0 and will play the winner of tonight's contest between the host Medgar Evers Cougars and the Eastern Nazarene College Lions in tomorrow's finals at 3 p.m.

Trinity scored the first eight points of the game and led, 36-27, at halftime.  A layup by Griffin gave Trinity a 20-9 lead with 9:04 left in the second quarter, and Aaliyah Fields brought the Blue Angels to within four at 31-27 with 1:40 remaining before halftime with a three-pointer.  Trinity junior Sheena Landy (Durham, Conn.) scored three of the last five points before intermission, as the Bantams used a 5-0 run to push their back to 36-27.

Griffin opened the third quarter with a layup and senior captain guard Alexa Menard (Wallingford, Conn.) drilled a three-pointer to open up a 41-27 lead, and Trinity extended its advantage to 30 at 73-43 on a layup by sophomore forward Emily Llerena (New Milford, Conn.) with just under six minutes left to play.
