FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's Alexis Andrukat (Smithsburg, Md. / Smithsburg) notched a double-double to lead the Blazers to a 67-58 overtime win against Shenandoah.
Andrukat had 15 points and 14 rebounds. The senior hit 7-of-11 field goals in the game an added two steals. Allie Appleby (Bel Air, Md. / C. Milton Wright) added a season-high 10 points and eight rebounds. Verkia Smith (Waldorf, Md. / North Point) dished out five assists.
Hood also received large contributions for its bench. Lauron Bagby (Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) scored 11 points and Alexis Briscoe (Columbia, Md. / North Point) matched Andrukat's 14 rebounds and two steals.
The win gave Hood three wins in its first five games for the first time since 2012-13.
The Blazers led by as many as 14 points in regulation. Leading just 18-16 with 5:54 left in the second period, Hood scored the next 14 points during a spurt that lasted into the second half. A bucket by Andrukat put the Blazers ahead 30-16 with 9:35 remaining in the third quarter.
Shenandoah trailed by nine points, 39-30, with 8:18 to play in regulation but scored 18 of the final 27 points of the fourth period to force overtime versus the Blazers.
Sophomore Kanesha Foster capped the 18-9 run by hitting a pair from the line with 27 seconds remaining.
The Hornets forced a missed shot on the Hood offensive end, where Erin French corralled the defensive rebound at the 17-second mark and SU immediately called timeout to take advantage of the new advancement rule.
Following the full timeout, Shenandoah inbounded in the front court and eventually worked it to Kirstyn Arcata at the top of the key for the game-winning attempt. Arcata's shot was just short, giving the ball back to Hood underneath its own basket.
French gave Shenandoah another chance as she stole the inbounds pass and put up a buzzer-beating left-handed layup that caromed off the right side of the rim.
The Blazers then seized control by scoring six of the first seven points of the extra period, eventually pushing their advantage out to nine, and did not let SU get closer than six the rest of the way.
The Hornets shot 23 percent to 32 percent for Hood and saw the Blazers score 24 points off of 26 SU turnovers.
Hood looks to stay in the win column on November 29, when Oberlin visits BB&T Arena.
