The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team defeated Rutgers-Newark University 57-56 in the final seconds of the game on the second day of the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic in Newark, NJ.
With the win the Cardinals improve to 2-0 for the start of the 2015 season.
Through the first quarter of play, Fisher found itself trailing by nine points as the Scarlet Raiders took a 19-10 lead into the second stanza. In the second quarter, Fisher trailed by as much as 15 points but managed to get back in the game behind six second quarter points from Caroline Robertson. A McKenzie Bezon free throw just before halftime cut the Rutgers-Newark lead to just two points as Fisher trailed 32-30 at the half.
After the Cardinals outscored the Scarlet Raiders 16-11 in the third quarter to take a 46-43 lead, the two teams battled back-and-forth in the fourth quarter. Rutgers-Newark tied the game at 54 with 1:10 left in the game but Fisher responded with a Bridget Carney made a free throw which was followed up by two more from Nicole Robinson with 46 seconds left on the clock, putting the Cardinals up by three. The Scarlet Raiders had an opportunity to steal the win in the final second of play on a jump shot but could not convert, leaving the score at 57-56.
Robertson and Nicole Robinson led Fisher with 11 total points each, while Emily Piacentini was not far behind with 10.
Also contributing for Fisher was Mary-Kate Cusack, who finished with nine total points and two turnovers.
The Cardinals are back in action at 8 p.m. on November 27th to compete in the Fisher-hosted Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament.
