UW-Whitewater Women Open Season With Road Win

The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater women's basketball team combined a high-pressure defense with a balanced offense Wednesday night to defeat Lakeland 60-47 in a non-conference contest in Sheboygan, Wis.

 

The Warhawks (1-0 overall), playing in their first game of the 2015-16 season, held the Muskies to 32.7 percent shooting from the field and forced 19 turnovers using a full-court, trapping defensive attack.

 

UW-Whitewater also outrebounded Lakeland (0-3) by a 46-37 margin, including a 20-10 edge on the offensive glass.

 

Five players scored between seven and 12 points for the Warhawks. Sophomore guard Brooke Trewyn posted 12 points and a team-best nine rebounds, while freshman forward Olivia Freckmann recorded 12 points on 6-of-6 shooting from the floor in 16 minutes off the bench.

 

Senior guard Abbie Reeves knocked down three 3-pointers en route to 11 points. Senior guard Jaya Perkins and sophomore guard Malia Smith added seven points apiece. Perkins also had six rebounds and three steals.

 

Following a tightly-contested first quarter, UW-Whitewater pulled away in the second, turning a 19-17 lead into a 31-19 advantage with 2:32 left in the period.

 

Senior forward Lisa Palmer converted a lay-up on the first possession of the third quarter, and Reeves hit a 3-pointer with 7:56 on the clock to give the Warhawks a 38-24 lead.

 

Reeves hit another 3-pointer with 20 seconds to go in the third to give UW-Whitewater its largest lead of the contest at 53-33.

 

The Warhawks continue non-conference play this weekend at the Main View Tipoff Tournament in Manchester, Ind. UW-Whitewater begins play at the two-day invitational Friday against Berea (Ky.) at 4 p.m. Central Time.
