UMass Dartmouth Downs WPI in Battle of Unbeatens

North Dartmouth, MA --- WPI sophomores Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) and Stasha Greenalch(Newington, CT) hit 3-pointers in the final 1:22 of regulation to help force overtime but host UMass Dartmouth connected on 75% of its extra session field goal attempts to defeat the Engineers 67-65 in a matchup of 2-0 women's basketball teams on Wednesday evening. 

With the win, UMass Dartmouth remains unbeaten on the season, rising to 3-0, while the Engineers fall to 2-1 on the young season.

Biney and Greenalch led the Crimson and Gray offensive attack with 17 and 14 points respectively while Tess Nogueira (Merrimac, MA) was a rebound short of her first career double-double (10 points, 9 rebounds).  Greenalch reset her career-high while Biney tied her career-best, which she achieved twice last season.

Preseason All-America Megan Ronaghan (North Attleboro, MA) paced all scorers with 22 points, securing five rebounds with an assist, for the host Corsairs. Senior Beth Castantini (Newburyport, MA) scored 12 points for her third-straight outing in double figures, also grabbing five rounds and dishing out a game-high four assists. Sophomore Chelsea Houlihan (Wolcott, CT) paced the Corsairs with nine rebounds while adding nine points, while classmate Alicia Kutil (Franklin, MA) added 10 points.

After leading by only two at halftime, UMass Dartmouth outscored WPI 14-9 in the third quarter before giving up 19 points in the fourth quarter. The Engineers were able to even the score prior to the end of regulation, thanks to a three-pointer from Greenlach with 35 seconds remaining.

The Corsairs then led from the 2:48 mark in the overtime period on, with Castantini recording UMD's first five points of the extra minutes with a jumper and a three-pointer. Ronaghan assisted on Castantini's three, and then contributed a layup with 2:11 remaining to help seal the game.

WPI is back in action Saturday, hosting Rhode Island College in its home opener at 5pm. The Corsairs will open Little East Conference play next, as they welcome Plymouth State at 1pm, also on Saturday.
