CAMDEN, N.J. (Nov. 18, 2015) – Sophomore center Michelle Obasi (Camden, NJ/Camden Catholic) collected a career-high 27 points and freshman guard Gabby Greene (Howell, NJ/Howell) poured in 20 points in her first collegiate game as the Rutgers University-Camden women's basketball team opened its season with a 79-45 victory over Bryn Mawr College here Wednesday night.
It was the first season-opening win for the Scarlet Raptors since the 2012-13 season and they didn't waste any time getting started. Greene scored 11 points in her first collegiate quarter, helping the Raptors break to a 25-11 lead over the Owls, who fall to 1-2. Greene scored seven of the game's first nine points as the Scarlet Raptors took a quick 9-0 lead. The closest the Owls came after that was when they broke the shutout on a three-pointer by freshman guard Erica Dwyer (Princeton, NJ/The Hun School of Princeton) to make it a 9-3 game.
Rutgers-Camden led, 40-26, at the half and built the lead to as many as 37 points in the fourth quarter (71-34).
Obasi finished the night with a double-double, the fourth of her young career, as she notched a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with her game-high 27 points. Her previous career scoring high was 20 points last season against New Jersey City University on Jan. 14. She also notched a career-high five steals and tied her career high with three blocked shots.
Greene, meanwhile, notched 20 points and tied sophomore forward Olivia Crenny (Blackwood, NJ/Camden Catholic) with a game-high six assists. Greene also added five steals, while Crenny added eight points, eight rebounds and four steals.
Raptor sophomore guard Cara Racobaldo (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) collected 12 points, five assists and a game-high seven steals, while junior forward Caroline Santiago (Vineland, NJ/Buena Regional) had eight points and nine rebounds.
Dwyer finished with 21 points for the Owls. Freshman guard Cleo Elizabeth-Robertson (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) added 12 points.
Rutgers-Camden shot 36-for-75 (48.0 percent) from the floor, while Bryn Mawr shot 18-for-47 (38.3). The Scarlet Raptors had a 44-21 advantage off the boards. Bryn Mawr made 37 turnovers to Rutgers-Camden's 23.
Bryn Mawr will host Nazareth College in its home opener Saturday at 1 p.m.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Sunday with a 2 p.m. game at Cedar Crest College.
