Southern Maine Cruises Past Thomas 64-24

            SALEM, Mass. – Senior Ella Ramonas (Portland, Maine/Deering) scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a comfortable 64-24 win over the Thomas College Terriers in the third game of the Salem State University Tip Off Classic Saturday afternoon at Twohig Gymnasium.

            Southern Maine shrugged off another cold start, after trailing Thomas 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, to outscore the Terriers 53-12 in the final three quarters to secure head coach Samantha Allen's first career win.  Southern Maine is now 1-1 on the season.  Thomas falls to 0-2 with the loss.

            Ramonas was 7-for-11 from the field and 2-for-3 from the free throw line for the game-high total.  Senior Megan Pelletier (Winslow, Maine/Messalonskee) added 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots, and senior Jill Madden (North Andover, Mass.) chipped in with nine points, four steals and two assists. 

            Kate McAllister led Thomas with seven points and Ashleigh Gagne chipped in with five points.  Kelly Macomber had a game-high 10 rebounds for the Terriers.

            Trailing 12-11 heading into the second quarter, USM held Thomas to just one field goal on 1-for-12 shooting en route to outscoring the Terriers 19-2.  Ramonas scored eight of her 16 points in the pivotal quarter on 4-for-4 shooting.  The Huskies' duplicated their defensive effort in the third quarter, again limiting the Terriers to just one field goal, to outscore TC 22-6 for a decisive 52-20 lead.  Pelletier scored seven of her 11 points in the quarter. The Huskies continued to roll in the fourth quarter led by six points from freshman Erin Murphy (Winterport, Maine/Hampden Academy).

            Southern Maine remains on the road for its next contest at the University of New England on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.).  The game will be streamed live via Channel 6 sports and will feature commentary from Husky alum and former three-time captain Nicole Garland (Portland, Maine/Deering).  Thomas College travels to nearby Colby College next Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game.
