Bridgewater Races Past Penn State-Altoona

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Bridgewater hit Penn State-Altoona with a 32-point first-period outburst Saturday afternoon to open up a double-digit lead and the Eagles went on to take an 89-75 victory over the Lions on the second day of the Eastern Mennonite Tip-Off Classic.

The Eagles, now 1-1 on the season, put five players in double figures. Senior center Oshene Kelly posted a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds – all at the offensive end of the court. Jessica Lam matched Kelly with 19 points and also added five rebounds and three steals. Cassidy Burkholder flirted with a triple-double as she scored 13 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out seven assists. Briana Moore hit double figures for the first time with 12 points and Jessi Strom scored 10. Freshman center Allie Coburn just missed double figures as she scored eight points.

The teams traded points early before the Eagles pressure defense started to pay dividends. Trailing 13-12. Bridgewater ran off eight straight points to take the lead for good. Back-to-back jumpers by Moore and Kara Campbell and two layups from Lam put the Eagles on top 20-13 with 2:11 left in the period.

Brittany Boslet hit a 3-pointer for the Lions, but the Eagles reeled off 12 points in the final 1:45 of the period to open up a 14-point lead. After a layup by Kelly made the score 23-16, three straight turnovers turned into seven quick points for Bridgewater. Kelly converted an offensive rebound into two points and Strom knocked down a 3-pointer for a 28-16 lead. A steal by Lam led to a layup for Burkholder, making the score 30-16.  Two free throws by the Lions' Shannon Zimmerman snapped the Eagles run, but Burkholder scored again with just eight seconds left, giving Bridgewater a 32-18 lead.

A layup by Kelly to start the second period pushed the margin to 16, but Penn State-Altoona battled back and an 18-4 run pulled the Lions to within two, 38-36, with 3:28 left in the first half.

Strom and Boslet then traded 3-balls before the Eagles closed the half with six straight points. Coburn scored on a 15-footer and a layup and Moore added a short jumper to give the Eagles a 47-39 lead at the break.

Lions guard Alexis Stitt opened the third period with a jumper but a short jumper by Kelly and a three-point play by Lam started an 11-0 run that pushed the Eagles lead back to double figures. Burkholder added two foul shots and buckets from Kelly and Strom gave Bridgewater a 58-41 lead with 7:08 left in the third period.

The lead hovered between 14 and 21 points the rest of the way as the Eagles finished off the 89-75 victory.

Stitt led the Lions with 19 points, followed by Boslet with 16 and Zimmerman with 14.

Bridgewater put up 90 shots and connected on 32 for 35.6 percent accuracy. Bridgewater held a 49-45 edge on the glass and also won the turnover battle. Bridgewater forced 29 turnovers while turning the ball over just 14 times.
