Defense keeps St. Thomas unbeaten on season

Senior Maggie Weiers had 18 points and 10 rebounds and the Tommies became the first women's basketball team in conference history to start a season 28-0 with Friday's 70-31 defeat of Minnesota-Morris in an NCAA first-round game at UST's Schoenecker Arena.
UST (28-0), which impoved to 15-0 at home, plays Luther Saturday night.
Anna Madrigal scored 25 points the Luther defense helped force 20 turnovers in Friday's 72-61 win over St. Norbert. The Norse (23-5), who sank nine 3-point baskets, closed the game on a 11-2 run to eliminate the Green Knights (22-4).
Luther will play St. Thomas in Saturday's 7 p.m., game for the right to advance to the Sweet 16 round.
St. Thomas shot 59 percent from the floor in the first half and led 43-23 at the break. The Toms recorded a 40-24 rebounding advantage and helped force 23 turnovers by the Cougars (16-12).
Jenna Dockter had 12 points and Alyssa Favilla added nine points. Twelve dufferent players scored for UST. The double double in points and rebounds was the 21st of Weiers' career.
 
 
 
Emily Auch had nine points and five rebounds for Morris.
 
 
The 31 points are the fewest ever allowed by St. Thomas women's basketball in 87 postseason games (62 NCAA games). This season St. Thomas has held five opponents under 40 points and 27 of their 28 foes under 60 points.
