ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick trailed by just four points at halftime, but the visiting St. John Fisher Cardinals outscored the Hawks by a 36-23 margin in the second half in a 74-57 win Friday night at Lambros Arena.
The Hawks could only manage one point in the opening seven minutes of the second half as Fisher gained a 13-point lead. 'Wick fought back to cut it to three but Fisher scored 16 of the final 19 points to pull away.
Hartwick's Emily Stone (Granby, CT/Granby) led all scorers with 23 points. She made all three of her three-point attempts and made 10-of-12 free throws in the game. She added three rebounds and three steals.
Taylor Vonasek (Willington, CT/E.O. Smith) was the only other Hawk in double figures with 15 points. She missed a double-double by one rebound as she finished with a game-high nine boards. Courtney Cirillo (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) chipped in five points and five rebounds.
In the first half, Stone and Vonasek connected on the Hawks' first two three-point attempts as Hartwick gained an 8-2 advantage. Seventeen straight points for the Cardinals would then give the visitors a 19-10 edge.
Eight straight Hawk points got them right back into the game and a Cirillo old-fashioned three-point play put the Hawks in front, 25-24 with 5:54 left in the half. The Cardinals quickly retook the lead and earned an eight-point upper hand with 1:32 left. Stone netted the final five Hartwick points as the Hawks trimmed the gap to four, 38-34, at halftime.
Eight consecutive points to start the second half and Fisher had a 12-point, 46-34, lead. The Cardinal advantage was extended to 14 with 10:39 left but nine straight 'Wick points cut the margin to three, 55-52, with under seven minutes to play.
With the deficit just four points, two straight Portia Velasco three-pointers in a minute span would make it a 10-point game and the Cardinals finished the game on a 16-3 run for the victory.
Sydney Bloomstein led Fisher with 21 points. Velasco and Mary Kate Cusack each registered 17 points.
Hartwick wraps up its season tomorrow against Nazareth. The Hawks and Golden Flyers tip-off at 2 p.m. at Lambros Arena.
