BRONX, N.Y. - The #4 Lehman College women's basketball team fell to #5 Hunter College, 57-54, in the Quarterfinals of the CUNY Athletic Conference Championships, on Saturday afternoon, in the APEX Main Gym. The Lightning will now wait for a potential bid into the ECAC Championships.
Junior forward Karrin Walker (New York, N.Y./Richard R. Green) led the way for the Lightning (16-10) with her 15th double-double of the year, scoring 23 points and adding 13 rebounds. Junior guard Jennifer Navarro (Jamaica, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) added 14 points.
The Lightning got off to a sluggish start as they were held scoreless for over seven minutes into the game. Navarro tallied a three-point basket to open the scoring for the home team, and cut Hunter's (11-15) lead to 6-3. A layup from Walker tied the game at eight, with 8:18 left to play in the opening half. Hunter was able to jump out to a four-point lead, before Navarro's jumper made the score 12-10. From that point on, the Hawks went on an 11-3 run for the remainder of the half to enter the break, up 23-13.
In the second half, the Hawks extended their lead to 27-14. Lehman answered by scoring 10 unanswered points, capped off by Walker converting a layup, while being fouled. She hit the free throw to pull Lehman within three, with 16:25 remaining in regulation. Walker scored seven out of 10 points during Lehman's surge.
After the Hawks went back up by six, Navarro scored another three-point basket to make it 31-28, in favor of Hunter, with 14:55 to go. However, Hunter countered by scoring 12 of the game's next 17 points to go back up by nine. Lehman would have to play catchup for the remainder of the game.
Lehman managed to rally to pull within 57-54 in the final minute of the game. Lehman had the ball down by three, with six seconds left. However, the Lightning were not able to get a shot off in the final seconds, as Hunter clinched a berth in the CUNYAC Semifinals.
Junior forward Amani Lightbourne (Elmsford, N.Y./Alexander Hamilton) scored seven points and had three assists, while sophomore guard Amely Del Rosario (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) scored six points and added four assists.
