Cortland Women Beat Oswego to Clinch SUNYAC Second Seed

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Junior Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow) scored 28 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Cortland defeated Oswego, 67-50, to clinch the second seed in the SUNYAC women's basketball standings.

Cortland finished the regular season with a 20-5 overall record for its first 20-win season since the 2009-10 campaign. The Red Dragons finished 14-4 in SUNYAC play and have earned a bye into the league tournament semifinals. Cortland will face an opponent to be determined on Friday at top-seeded Geneseo.

Dumas' 28 points are her best in a Cortland uniform and the second-best effort of her collegiate career behind a 34-point outing versus Baruch last season when she played at Hartwick. Dumas hit 12-of-24 shots from the field, led Cortland with five steals, and with her 13 rebounds she recorded her 12th double-double of the season.

Senior Rae Frasier (Schenectady) also registered a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. She hit 5-of-7 field-goal attempts. Senior Lindsey Minor (Wheatley Heights/St. John the Baptist) made 4-of-5 shots in an eight-point effort and senior Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) added seven points and five rebounds while make 3-of-4 shots.

Also for the Red Dragons, senior Brittany Rando (Owego/Owego Free Academy) and junior Shannon White (West Islip/St. Anthony's) shared the team lead with four assists apiece. Rando also had five rebounds and Minor handed out three assists.

Alisha Jacobs led Oswego (8-17, 6-12 SUNYAC) with 26 points, 19 in the first half. She made 7-of-9 shots, including 5-of-6 from the 3-point arc, and she hit all seven of her free throws. Courtney Ameele scored six points and Heather Hebert led the Lakers with 10 rebounds.

Cortland led 21-8 less than nine minutes into the game, but Oswego came back with a 16-2 run and took a 24-23 lead on a Zana Dillard layup with 4:38 left. The teams were tied 26-26 with 3:24 left, and that score remained the same nearly two minutes later before Cortland finished the half on a 9-0 run. Minor started the streak with a jumper, Dumas hit a layup at the 1:10 mark, Minor made a layup with 10 seconds left, and, after an Oswego turnover, freshman Kerry McHugh (Highland Mills/Monroe-Woodbury) hit a long 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to give Cortland a 35-26 lead.

The hosts were down seven at 45-38 with 12:10 remaining after an Ameele layup, but Dumas scored the game's next seven points to extend the Red Dragons' lead to 14. Cortalnd held a double-figure lead the rest of the way, and Dumas scored 18 of her 28 points in the second half.

Cortland held Oswego to 28 percent field-goal shooting overall and 23 percent (5-of-22) from long distance. Cortland shot 43 percent overall, but only 15 percent (4-of-27) from the arc. The Red Dragons outrebounded the Lakers, 50-36, with a 19-12 edge in offensive boards.
