Geneseo Comes From Behind To Defeat Cortland, 68-64, In Overtime

CORTLAND, N.Y. – SUNY Geneseo junior forward Allison McKenna totaled 16 points and five rebounds as the Knights overcame a 19-point deficit to defeat Cortland, 68-64, in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play, Tuesday night.

Sophomore guard Kara Houppert also scored 16 points and was 4-8 from beyond the arc whilesenior guard Biz Reinhardt had 10 points, 11 rebounds and six assists and senior forwardShannon McGinnis added 12 points and seven rebounds in the win.

"The team dug themselves into a hole in a disappointing first half but had the courage to dig themselves out in the second. This group grew up a lot tonight and it was fun to watch," said head coach Scott Hemer. "In the second half, especially late with the game on the line, I thought our veteran players showed a lot of poise. When you can get that on the road on a Tuesday night, good things will happen."

The Red Dragons (11-3, 6-2 SUNYAC) dominated the first half, taking an early 12-4 lead after a making a three-pointer at 13:54. With 9:16 on the clock, a lay-up from Cortland junior forwardBrittney Dumas put the lead at 10, 19-9. Dumas finished the night with a game-high 26 points.

At 2:01, Dumas made another bucket to give the Red Dragons their largest lead of the night, 34-15, as the hosts took a 34-18 advantage into halftime.

McGinnis scored on the Knights' first two possessions of the second half to bring the score to 34-22, but Cortland built the lead back up to 15, 40-25, with 13:06 remaining in the game.

Trailing 47-33 after a Red Dragons three-point play with 10:08 on the clock, Geneseo went on a 7-0 run to bring the score to 47-40. The run was capped by a three-pointer from Houppert.

At 3:30, Cortland made a jump shot to take a 52-43 lead but the Knights scored the final nine points of the game to send it into overtime. McKenna scored six points in the final three minutes while McGinnis made a free-throw with 26 seconds remaining to tie it at 52.

After back-to-back threes from Red Dragons' sophomore guard Cassidy Chapko to put Geneseo down 58-56 with 3:39 left in extra-time, junior guard Dana Cohan and Reinhardt hit threes of their own to give the Knights a 62-58 lead with 2:33 on the clock they would not relinquish. Cohan recorded 11 points in the win.

McKenna made six straight free-throws in the final minutes to secure the come from behind victory for Geneseo.

The Knights (10-4, 6-1 SUNYAC) return to action this Friday to host Plattsburgh for a game set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m. followed by a match-up with Potsdam on Saturday at 4 p.m.
