Geneseo Earns 74-61 Victory Over New Paltz

GENESEO, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior forward Shannon McGinnis totaled 24 points and 10 rebounds for her 12th double-double of the season while junior forward Allison McKenna added 19 points to lead the Knights to a 74-61 victory over visiting New Paltz in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action, Friday night.

Sophomore guard Kara Houppert scored 11 points while senior guard Biz Reinhardt had seven points and four rebounds in the win.

"In the second half, we were much more composed on the offensive end, we limited our turnovers and controlled the boards," said head coach Scott Hemer. "That was the game plan we had going into tonight and they executed that to come away with the win."

At the 14:46 mark, McGinnis made a lay-up to give Geneseo an 11-10 lead. McGinnis went on to score eight of the Knights' next ten points to give the team a 22-14 advantage with 10:15 on the clock.

The Hawks (14-8, 10-5 SUNYAC) responded by going on a 11-2 run to take a one-point lead, 25-24, at 5:25. The visitors extended their lead to six with just over a minute to play in the half and were up 38-35 at the break.

At 18:07, Geneseo fell down by six, 43-37, after a lay-up from New Paltz sophomore guard Kit Small. The Knights regained the lead, 46-45, when Houppert made a lay-up with 14:59 on the clock and held onto it for the remainder of the game.

With 12:07 left to play, McGinnis converted a free-throw to put Geneseo up by nine, 54-45. The Hawks cut their deficit to two, 61-59, at 7:47, but the Knights went on a 13-2 run to clinch their 11th-consecutive victory and solidify their hold on first place in the conference standings.

McGinnis passed Annie Verdino '08 (1,319) to move into fourth place on Geneseo's all-time scoring list with 1,322 points to date. 

Geneseo returns to action tomorrow afternoon to face Oneonta at 4 p.m. in Schrader Gymnasium as the team's seniors will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
