FREDONIA, N.Y. - SUNY Geneseo senior forward Shannon McGinnis scored 15 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for her fifth double-double in the last six games to lead the Knights over Fredonia, 61-56, in their first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game of the season, Tuesday night.

Junior guard Dana Cohan had 15 points and handed out four assists while senior center Katie Peterson added 10 points in the win.

"We simply made enough good plays down the stretch to come out of Fredonia with a victory," said head coach Scott Hemer. "It was a sloppy game at times but we were able to make some big plays to get the win."

Geneseo held a slim lead for a majority of the first half, going ahead by five, 14-9, after sophomore guard Bridgit Ryan hit a lay-up with 9:40 on the clock.

The Knights held onto their lead as Peterson made a layup at 4:19 to bring the score to 22-17 as the team entered halftime with a 27-20 advantage.

At 16:21 in the second half, the Blue Devils (3-6, 0-3 SUNYAC) made a jumper to cut their deficit to one, 32-31. Fredonia took the lead just under a minute later, 34-32, after hitting a shot from beyond the arc.

Neither team held more than a three-point lead for the next few minutes until senior forward Lea Sobieraski made a lay-up to put Geneseo up, 44-40, with 11:34 remaining in the game. Sobieraski finished the night with six points and five rebounds.

At 7:26, sophomore guard Kara Houppert hit a lay-up to extend the Knight's lead to eight, 52-44. With 2:18 to play, Cohan hit a shot from long range to put the team up, 59-51, but the Blue Devils responded with a three-pointer of their own to make it 59-54.

Fredonia cut the lead to three, 59-56, with 18 seconds on the clock but Geneseo held on to come away with the victory.

The Knights (5-3, 1-0 SUNYAC) continue their three-game road trip to start the conference schedule on Friday, taking on host Oneonta at 7:30 p.m. before heading to New Paltz on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. tip.
