Blue Devils' tournament chances take a hit with loss to Pointers

MENOMONIE (February 14, 2015) - While not mathematically out of the race to earn a conference tournament berth, UW-Stout's chances took a big hit with a four point loss to UW-Stevens Point, 68-64, Saturday at Johnson Fieldhouse.

The Blue Devils (6-17, 4-10 WIAC) fell into a tie for eighth place and are two games out of the sixth and final WIAC tournament berth with two games to go. The Pointers (12-12, 7-8 WIAC) strengthened their chances to earn a spot.

The game that ran just over two hours featured 55 total personal fouls, 27 on Stevens Point, 58 on Stout. The free throw line was a busy place for both teams. The Pointers connected on 23-of-36 charity shots (63.9 percent), while Stout connected on 21-of-27 (77.8 percent), matching a season-high for free throws made.

The Pointers turned the ball over 23 times, while the Blue Devils turned the ball over 14 times. Stevens Point out-rebounded Stout, 45-33.

The teams were slow out of the gate, with no score for the first three minutes. The game was tied 37-37 at halftime and the game was tied 10 total times throughout the game. The score was never more than nine points, and that for only a brief period midway through the first period.

Both teams had three players score in double figures. The Pointers' Joann Wolfenberg led all scorers with 18 points and had eight rebounds. Lauren Anklam tossed in 14 points and Jamie Destache scored 11 points, all in the second half.

Stout was led by Kyleigh Hebert (Jr, Spencer) with 14 ponts. Jenna Goldsmith (So, St. Anthony, Minn) added 12 points and Haley Froehlich (Sr, Mondovi) chipped in 10 points.

The Blue Devils will close out the home portion of their schedule when they host UW-Superior, Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. Stout will be at UW-Whitewater, Saturday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. to close out the regular season.
