A day after seeing its 12-game winning streak come to an end at SUNY Polytechnic, the Lancaster Bible women's basketball team took its frustrations out on SUNY Cobleskill as the Chargers cruised to a 70-31 victory in Cobleskill, N.Y. The victory improves the Chargers to 18-4 overall and 15-2 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play.
Penn St. Abington also won on Saturday, so Lancaster Bible's lead in the NEAC South Division remains at 1 1/2 games. The Nittany Lions face Morrisville State on Sunday and then both Penn St. Abington and Lancaster Bible will play three games during the final week of the season next week.
On Saturday, SUNY Cobleskill scored the first points of the game and took a 2-0 lead, but Lancaster Bible scored the next 14 points and capped the scoring run on a layup by junior Katy Stover with 13:25 to play in the first half. The Fighting Tigers hit a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to nine, but another 12-2 run from the Chargers over a five minute span increased Lancaster Bible's lead to 26-7.
The Chargers continued to control the game and junior Aubrey Folger hit 1-of-2 free throws with 58 seconds to play in the first half to give Lancaster Bible its biggest lead of the half at 37-13.
SUNY Cobleskill opened the half on a 6-0 run and Lancaster Bible didn't score a point until the 14:49 mark, but once the Chargers got rolling again, they continued to score at will and play tough defense. After limiting the Fighting Tigers to just four first half field goals, Lancaster Bible allowed just eight in the second half and finished the game on a 20-6 run over the final 9:30 of the game.
"We did a great job rebounding the ball today and I thought we responded well to last night's loss," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Rachel Steinbarger said.
Folger finished with a game-high 22 points and pulled down 12 rebounds, while Shanice Smith had 18 points and 18 rebounds. Stover also finished with 18 points and added three steals and two assists. Playing one of her best games of the season was freshman Molly Arnold who had six points and five rebounds.
"Molly played very well today and was a great help off of the bench," Steinbarger said. "I thought Aubrey demanded the ball in the second half and really led the way on both ends of the floor."
Lancaster Bible shot 47 percent (28-of-60) from the floor and held an opponent under 40 points for the fourth time this season.
"It was a good game to have fun and take care of business," Lancaster Bible forward Shanice Smith said. "We have to enjoy every game and continue to realize our potential as a team. We are excited for the final week of the regular season and hope to keep playing well as we head into the playoffs."
Lancaster Bible opens the final week of the regular season in Williamsport, Pa. on Tuesday when the Chargers take on Penn College at 5 p.m. The Chargers will then face Gallaudet next Friday in Horst Athletic Center and follow that up with Senior Day on Saturday afternoon against Wilson.
