Yellowjackets Down Oshkosh, Climb Into Tie For First In WIAC

More news about: UW-Superior

Triple-doubles don't occur all that often in college basketball. But Saturday afternoon proved to be the perfect time for Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) to notch her first such performance of the 2014-15 campaign.

Behind Linzmeier's 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists, the UW-Superior women's basketball team utilized a suffocating defense to pull away for a 58-46 victory over UW-Oshkosh at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.

The victory not only moved the Yellowjackets (17-6 overall, 11-3 WIAC) into a tie for first-place in the WIAC conference standings, it also snapped the Titans' six-game winning streak while assuring an undefeated regular season home record for UW-Superior.

Matters remained tight throughout a defensive first half that saw the two teams combine for less than 35 percent shooting and commit 21 turnovers. Nevertheless, the Yellowjackets managed to take a 17-9 lead with 7:49 remaining in the opening frame after two free throws by Linzmeier.

The Titans (19-4, 11-3) rallied right back, scoring the next nine points for an 18-17 lead after a score by Eliza Campbell at the 2:32 mark.

UW-Superior responded by scoring eight of the next 12 points, six of which came on two straight three-pointers by Allyssa Lindberg (Marquette, Mich./Marquette), for a 25-22 edge at the intermission.

The Yellowjackets expanded their edge to 32-24 early in the second half on a jumper by Sarah Lekson (North Branch, Minn./North Branch), an inside score by Lindberg, and three-point play by Linzmier with 14:50 remaining in regulation.

UW-Oshkosh fought back to within three at 12:31 after two free throws by Campbell and continued to stay within striking distance over the next 4:31, culminating in Taylor Schmidt's two free throws that made it a 41-38 UW-Superior lead with exactly eight minutes showing on the clock.

But the Yellowjackets pulled away from there, scoring the next nine points for a 50-38 cushion after a Grace Kennedy (Wausau, Wis./Newman Catholic) lay-in at the 4:54 mark of regulation.

The Titans never got closer than five points the rest of the way as Linzmeier and Brynn Liljander (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) combined to go 4-for-4 from the charity stripe over the final 1:50.

Along with Linzmeier's triple-double, the Yellowjackets got 18 points from Lindberg, who finished 6-of-8 from the field while knocking down 4-of-5 from three-point range.

UW-Oshkosh was paced by Schmidt with 15 points.

The Yellowjackets hit the road to face UW-Stout on Wednesday. Opening tip from Johnson Fieldhouse is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on 91.3 FM with Matt Johnson on the call.
