SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Sophomore Lexi Windwer (Milton, Mass.) knocked down four three-pointers and scored a game-high 17 points, leading Springfield College past visiting Babson College, 62-42, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball action on Wednesday night at Blake Arena.
Springfield, which is ranked eighth in the region by the NCAA, moves to 17-6 overall and takes over sole possession of first place in the NEWMAC at 12-2. Babson, which is ranked 11th in the first NCAA regional rankings, drops to 15-7 overall and 11-3 in conference play.
Senior Jaimie Bickelhaupt (Brookfield, Conn.) recorded her 13th double-double of the season for the Pride, finishing with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Heather Lewis (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) added 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting in the win.
Sophomore Jennifer Narlee (Medfield, Mass.) recorded her second consecutive double-double with 12 points and 11 boards to lead the Beavers, while junior Linnett Graber (Roseland, N.J.) added seven points and seven rebounds.
Despite making just two field goals over the opening eight minutes, the Green and White trailed just 13-10 after a layup by Graber with 11:18 to play in the first half. Back-to-back hoops by sophomores Taylor Russell (Braintree, Mass.) and Giovanna Pickering (Hull, Mass.) knotted the game at 15-15, and a jump shot by Graber capped a 6-0 spurt that gave the Beavers their first lead of the game at 17-15 with 7:43 to go before halftime.
The lead changed hands three times late in the period before Springfield closed with a 7-1 spurt to take an eight-point halftime lead. Windwer knocked down three straight free throws to put the Pride back in front 23-21, and sophomore Danielle Racette (North Adams, Mass.) followed a Lewis layup with a three-pointer just before the buzzer to make it 28-22 going to the locker room.
Leading 32-26 in the early stages of the second half, Springfield took control of the game with a 16-4 run. First-year Heather King (Lebanon, N.H.) buried a jumper to push the lead to double digits for the first time at 37-26 with 15:16 to play, and Windwer drilled a three-pointer two possessions later following a Bickelhaupt offensive rebound as the Pride pushed its lead to 40-26.
Beavers' sophomore Ashley Snyder (Foxboro, Mass.) cut the deficit back to 12 with a hoop in the paint, but consecutive hoops by Lewis, Bickelhaupt and junior Emily Gins (Fort Myers, Fla.) gave Springfield a 48-30 edge with 9:45 to go in the game. Babson, which made just four field goals over the first 16 minutes of the second half, trailed by as many as 22 in the final five minutes.
The Pride shot 48 percent (25-of-50) from the field and finished 7-of-14 from beyond the arc. Springfield also scored 20 points off 18 Babson turnovers.
The Beavers shot a season-low 28 percent (14-of-50), including a 1-of-12 effort from three-point range.
Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson travels to Smith College at 2 p.m., while the Pride hosts MIT at 12 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Babson is 22-10 all-time against Springfield and had won 15 of its last 16 against the Pride before Wednesday's loss…the Beavers, who entered the game with the top scoring offense in the NEWMAC, were held to a season-low 42 points…Babson is now 2-5 on the year when shooting below 40 percent…Narlee is averaging is averaging 11.3 rebounds over the last three games and has pulled down at least 11 boards in five of the last eight games.
