BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team had trouble controlling the ball throughout the game as they were downed by Brooklyn College, 67-46, Wednesday night at the West Quad Center.
The Lady Bears (14-9) have now lost two straight games, both coming against opponents out of the CUNYAC .
Senior Taylor Raccuglia (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) scored a team-high 21 points to go with six assists and two steals in a losing effort. Samantha Retas (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) corralled a team-best 12 rebounds and added six points and three blocks.
Freshman Destiny Marino (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) added eight points and five boards along with three assists and three steals. Brittany Cervino (College Park, N.Y./St. Agnes) led the team with four assists and chipped in with five points.
Vanessa D'Ambrosi led all scorers with 24 points in the win for the Bulldogs (17-5), who have now won nine straight games. She also added nine boards and three steals. Megan Campbell secured a double-double, tallying 16 points and 10 rebounds. Nicole Francomano netted 19 points along with seven steals and six rebounds.
Brooklyn jumped out and built up a double-digit advantage just six minutes into the first half. The Lady Bears worked their way back and cut the deficit to just three with 6:39 left. Following a timeout, the Bulldogs erupted for an 8-0 run over the next two and a half minutes as they went into halftime up 36-27.
After Brooklyn extended their lead to 19 in the second half, the Lady Bears would use a 7-0 run to slice the deficit with 7:02 remaining. However, the Bulldogs unleashed a 15-6 run the rest of the way to secure the victory.
St. Joseph's was held to just 33.3% (18 for 54) from the field, while the Bulldogs shot at a 39.4% clip, including hitting eight three-pointers. Brooklyn owned an edge on both rebounds (41-37) and assists (14-11). They also forced 25 Lady Bears turnovers and capitalized on 26 points off those mistakes.
The Lady Bears travel up to the state capital to face off with Albany Pharmacy in a crucial HVIAC showdown on Saturday, February 14th as part of a doubleheader with men's team. Tip time for the women's game is at 1:00 p.m.
